my son has known since birth he is adopted - i never wanted to have to have that "sit down i have something to tell you" day

as a baby i read adoption story books to him

shared the few items i had from his birth mother with him (baby clothes, picture, letter)

and i promised him - at the appropriate time - i would help him find his birth family

as some of you may remember - my townhouse in atlanta caught fire

we moved to jacksonville

and the items from abu's birth mother were packed away in some box by the insurance company - which box was the question

because of my work - i work with major corporations - i am in and out of contracts anywhere from 6 months to a year

and subjected to background checks when starting a new contract

and this time - someone requested my high school diploma

on top of not seeing that diploma for 39 years -- what box is it in - and do i even have it

so i have to finally face the boxes - dusty boxes - in the garage - and soon

i say a little pray to be directed to the right box

grab my box cutters and go at it

a flood of memories flash before me - my grandfather's bible - jewelry from my grandmother, faded pictures of people i do not know

my high school yearbooks - and tucked in the back of one - my high school diploma

and miracles of miracles - abu's little memory bag

i open the memory bag and see the tiny infant clothes - his favorite baby toy - buddy - he was a furry dog and now looks like a matted mutt

i find the letter from his birth mother - with censures done by the adoption agency

i find a picture of his birht mom and his brother at his brother's 2nd birthday party (14 years ago)

and i find a gift certificate from his birth grandmother - that somehow i never cashed - with her entire name signed on it

i stare at the name on the gift certificate and think birth grandmother was leaving us a "bread crumb" back to her and smiled

the name is an unusual one - not mary jones - which i could never find in google

and his brother must be the only person in the whole world with his first name - you know one of those african-american made up names

and i have his birth mother's name - also unusual spelling

i take a deep breath - ponder the consequences

and do what i've done for so many other people

search for abu's family

the last name of the gift certificate does not have to be the last name of the others - marriage changes things sometimes

so i decide to hit up facebook and use the brother's unusual first name with the last name of the grandmother

in seconds i'm staring at a picture of abu

but it's not abu - it's his brother

i copy the picture and send it off to a couple of my sister/friends with "who is this?"

both respond "abu"

now that i've found him - what do i do? brother may not know anything - is it right to just barge in?do i tell abu?

so i search for birth mom and grandmother too

i find grandma - name address telephone number - living very close to my former atlanta residence

and i find birth mom . . . her arrest record and her booty picture on facebook <sigh>- with an address about 5 miles from my jacksonville residence

okay - birth family apparently located

do i tell abu? and then what?
