Prior to August of 1962 Jamaicans were British citizens. He went to England as a British Citizen but on the day Jamaica gained independence all Jamaicans living in England were no longer British citizens. They were all encouraged to take out passport for new country. You know a lot a people living in England at that time never understand the ramifications. So you go to sleep on Aug. 5, 1962 a British citizen and you wake up the next morning Aug. 6 and you have now become a Jamaican. It vexed my father to know end he kept insisting that he was a British Citizen (having been recruited and fought in war) and since he was born in 1911 but the British Government said no you are now a Jamaican. Eventually he took out his citizenship. Some people fell through the cracks - I can see how this happened to this poor man.

not entirely true,from what I know the rules were (very quietly) changed in 1983,and not many people became aware of the new regulations,including those jamaicans that were living in the UK and had children here,even the status of the children changed,and they were not automatically british,in mr bogle,s case,its simply a matter of complacency,laziness ,ignorance,and apathy,he had never applied for british citizenship,but his original passport should have had an original stamp to say he had legal status,or at least an "given leave to stay indefinitely" stamp,for whatever reason,that passport did not have that stamped in it,he was technically a jamaican traveling on a jamaican passport,which held no visa to return to the UK,so the british embassy declined his application for a visa on the grounds that his original passport had no legal "given leave to stay" stamped in it.

He can prove that he was living and working here,by showing his national insurance number,I presumed that will have been the document his mother took to jamaica,he will eventually be allowed to return after the wheels of beauracy have turned a few times,however,I certainly hope he has learn a very big lesson,don't be so damn stupid and ignorant.
