Six of one ting, half dozen of the same. Racists in Jamaica, racists everywhere.
Sure, mzungu`s are racists. Introverted verandah in house family racists.
It is funny sometimes when someone becomes black, er badlisted(trying not to sound racist) the probable inclusive remark is that so and so black and ugli...and that`s not an exclusively out of a mzungu mouth remark.
Of course do not exclude the red dutty bway remark.
Then there is the white boy remark used when threatened or when insecure by the presence or position of mzungus.

Mostly racist remarks are heard when things dont go too well for a subject and in Jamaica apart from escalating murders, people get along very well whether there is differences in the colours of skin. One is hardly ever if never murdered because of skin difference. The issue of racism is usually demonstrated in the confines of family and home.

In places like America where there is a high incidence of insecurity and a conspicuous diversity of skin colour, racism is the usual battle cry when people of different colour have the simplest of other differences.

it's hard to cry pure racism when much of the discrimination is lighter skin blacks against darker skin blacks...but I believe that cb is right though...

These books explored those dynamics and yet so many seem unaware or at least unwilling to admit wha' gwan.

There was a study that was done in Jamaica during the 1970s and it has been replicated MANY times. It's discussed in the book Adolescence in Jamaica. Black Jamaican teenagers were asked to describe their ideal mate and almost without exception they described VERY light peopel with Caucasian features. These were young people who were born after independence. So yes, it's a problem in our psyche and I don't know when we will overcome it as anyone who tries to call attention from Garvey time until the present is attacked.

You should come up here to Toronto and she how de man dem flock afta White women. The ones that fascinate me are those who are supposedly dread with a full head of locks with dem White Canadian Rasta woman. As fi de Mzungu Jamaican man dem, mos' a dem wouldn't even fart pon a Black woman. You know I have been to some parties up here and when you walk in, is a room <span style="font-weight: bold">full</span> a White people wid a sprinkling a Chinese and 1 or 2 Black people. the thing about it is that as Jamaicans we have been taught to pride ourselves on our diversity...hence our motto &quot;out of many one people&quot;. but it is hard to deny that racism exists. At the same time, I see discrimination more on a classist level...my argument is based on my own findings having grown up among the children of some of Jamaica's elite. And what I did notice as a child was that the &quot;white&quot; kids used to accept the black kids into their social circle once they were monied. And so it goes later on into adult life where dating and job opportunities were concerned. I would say maybe there is racism from the &quot;older heads&quot; but the younger generation...up to late 30's I guess...do not care so much about race.

This went on LONG before Manley. There was a time when you couldn't get certain jobs in Jamaica unless you were lighter than a certain shade...but I know you know that already.

There was a time when you couldn't get certain jobs in Jamaica unless you were lighter than a certain shade...but I know you know that already. </div></div>...there was a cultural preference for lighter persons, it has been discussed umpteen times on this Board. Black Grannies used to encourage their grand kids to marry up so they could get opportunities, but it the race baiting tactics used by Michael Menlie and Company <span style="font-style: italic">(who were themselves Jamaicans Whites)</span> to divide the Citizens of Jamaica, that led to race baiting and shade delimitation on a grand scale in Jamaica.

The kind of tactics that ran many Chinese and white Jamaicans out of the country along with anyone who was educated, owned businesses and did not follow the Party line.
