Hurricane Gustav hit western Cuba on Aug. 30 and Ike slammed into the country's eastern flank barely a week later, then raked most of the island.

The government says the storms caused the greatest storm damage in Cuba's hurricane-battered history, killing seven people, damaging nearly 450,000 homes and crippling food production and infrastructure.

Rodriquez says the principal challenge is the reconstruction of the country, whose losses were initially calculated at $5 billion but which today are seen as far higher.

He offered no new estimates.

However, Civil Defence Chief Ramon Pardo Guerra told visiting Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva that collective damage from the storms had reached nearly 8.7 billion convertible pesos, or about $9.4 billion.

That makes them nearly twice as costly as officials originally believed.

Cuba's measurement of GDP includes spending on free health care, education through college and monthly food rations provided by the communist system - an uncommon methodology that critics say inflates growth figures.

Officially, the economy expanded by 7.5 per cent last year and posted a 12.5 per cent growth rate in 2006.

Rodriguez projected last year that the economy would grow eight per cent in 2008, but he and other officials began warning in July, even before the hurricanes hit, <span style="font-weight: bold">that rising global food and oil prices would cause &quot;inevitable adjustments and restrictions</span>.&quot;

It is obvious that countries such as Cuba and Institution's such a the Shari Banks and the Sparkassens in Germany are going to be the last hit simply because they are not directly connected to the speculative activities of the big financial houses, but make no mistake a crash in the world economy will hurt all peoples and be felt in all corners of the globe.

it aways amazes me how many people declare themselves experts and make all kinda proclamations.. yet here we are.

Cuba has been boycotted and embargoed for decades.. the &quot;spoilts&quot; of the &quot;Developed&quot; and Capitalist nations is not a norm for Cuban society.
People suffer psycologically because of their perception of their future.

Give an example, while an average American may shoot himself in the head becuase he just lost his $800K home (but still got his say $250K job), people in many of these other societies give thanks for a hut and basic food and a likkle extra to spend.
In my humble pov, we know nada.. none of the &quot;experts&quot; alive has seened this before (short a di Depression, and this may be worse), and all we doing is talking outta wi hooohaa..

Worse to worse, the ones who will survive is the ones who desire the least. Cuba has been enbargoed for decades (mi sey it again) forced to survive by their own means.

it is growing for two reasons.. massives energy subsidies from Venezuela and high price of primary exports rise in the price of nickel... its productivity has fallen.... The embargo is a red herring.. Cuba imports 35 % of its agricultural products from the US.. it can import all otjer altetaives from other sources ???? what would they get from the US products from ford and GM ????Give up toyotas ???? more tourists ??? their capacity is being met from Europe ? Drugs ???

All the US has to offer besides cars is finacial products.. If the cubans want that tey could ask victoria mutual...
