</div></div>When and where did i say that it was OK for students to resort to violence??Make sure that you are not confusing the act of acknowledge the likely result of an act and condoning pr saying it is OK.
IT is like saying that on investigation,i have discovered that the poor servicing of a piece of machinery resulted in the death of the operator,is the same as me condoning his death. we the educated have to be able to identify the failings of the strategy of nation building,in the face of the if the present destruction and greif it is causing us.
then fashion the appropriate tools to correct it or we will be doomed to return to colonialism and slavery, as happened to the American blacks after the period of reconstruction.
much of What they are celebrating today was achieved over 160 years ago,but because of the dirth of skills required to maintain and advance it,they are doing it all over. the same could be said of Haiti too.

Bursar attacked at Hanover school

WESTERN BUREAU:

The Green Island police in Hanover are probing a case of grievous bodily harm following an attack at the Green Island High School on Friday that left the school's bursar suffering from extensive injuries.

The alleged attacker is said to be a junior staff member.

The police say the assault was carried out shortly before midday.

One person, who claimed to have been a witness, said the attack was played out in the full view of students and teachers.

The alleged witness said the bursar was talking with the principal while standing in a corridor when the junior staff member assaulted her.

&quot;She grabbed her in her head and start fist har and kick and fling her down on the ground in front of the principal's office,&quot; the alleged eyewitness said.

She further said a group of teachers intervened and pulled the attacker off the bursar.

According to the witness, the attacker was then taken away by a vice-principal.

The principal, Ada Mitchell, confirmed that an incident took place at the school on Friday, but declined to reveal details.

Official comment

&quot;The incident has been reported to the Ministry (of Education) but I have not spoken to my chairman yet, so I prefer not to comment officially until have spoken to him,&quot; Mitchell said.

This incident follows another at Kingston College last Tuesday when classes had to be suspended at the school's North Street campus after several ninth-grade students attacked and beat a teacher.

The teacher sustained injuries to his eyes.

Two days later, two students from the same institution were taken into police custody for their involvement in another violent incident that left one of their schoolmates injured.

The Editor, Sir:

I have wrestled with this thought for some time and I believe it is appropriate to share the resultant reflection with your readers at this juncture. The words of the former president of the Kingston College Old Boys' Association, Dr Winston Davidson, rekindled these dormant thoughts, when he said (according to The Gleaner of January 23) &quot;With behaviour like that, those boys can't continue in the school. They should be expelled forthwith.&quot; This was said in reference to the incident at Kingston College where a teacher was beaten by students of the school.

I don't know what gives children the power or the temerity to carry out brazen actions like that, nor will I be able to fathom the reason for other children to join in, when one is doing wrong. When I was growing up, I must admit, there were children who took a step beyond their rightful place, but always there was someone to pull them back in line. I believe the children, being a product of the society, are just painting the portrait of their time. They are fed violence on a daily basis.

Children should never be expelled from school. If they are under the age of 14 when they commit an atrocity, they should be taken to another school environment where strict attention is paid to their particular area of concern. As soon as they become satisfactorily reformed, they should then be returned to the regular school system. If they are old enough to be tried in a criminal court, then, they should pay the penalty for their deed. They should however be allowed, and facilities should be provided, for them to complete their education.

Expelling children helps no one. It particularly does not help the child. I believe that school is about helping students to excel in life, and that ejecting a student is counterproductive in this regard. These children are already misguided. We cannot afford to augment this undesirable condition.

When we excommunicate our children we are sending them into the waiting arms of the perpetrators of criminality.

Respect and even LOVE for your teacher was so profound, this sort of thing could not and would not happen.
