I was talking to an Italian who cannot understand this rush to let go people.... He works for ENI and he pointed out that ENI in the last thirty years never ever let any one go (world wide)...He compared this to the Kanadian and US energy companies....

hit dread out deh mi naw lie.... Personally I have had my skill set in demand.. the last week I had interesting offers for the US central america and middle east... I made a commitment verbal for 2 years to stay in Europe... contract is due for renewal so will ask for a cost of living increase only.... I have friends urge me to take staff rather than stay consulting.. but my logic is there is need for me.. if I go staff it is more likely to cut staff than consultants.. (looks better for the share holders head count down)...

I look round the streets of London and the sales that are still on are frightening.. I watched the price of houses drop 25 % in the last three months (there seems to be a disconnect to what I notice and the offical figures)...

The healthcare industry too???!!! I was hoping that environment wouldn’t be affected as much, but I guess so. Like you said, people will continue to get sick and need quality care.

I work PT at walmart who is said to be one of the few retailers making a profit. However at my store, each employee’s hours have been cut almost in half. We are told there will no longer be “set” scheduled hours. You may get 30 one week then 10 the next. To a lot a people there, this is their only source of income so they are in a serious panic. Some folks get violent when you start taking away their means to pay bills and feed their family. The thing is, they want to actually blame someone and trying to say it is a personal decision by management to cut our hours to save theirs. A heap of angry people pon the sales floor deh.

there are a few companies out there turning a profit.
talked to a friend the other day, who said his company (amazon) was doing well...actually made a profit.
but management put them on notice that even with the profit things would just be in a holding pattern. the company wasnt gonna start any bonuses, new program, raises ect.
but he's happy...at least they arent getting cut.

Forgot to say that they discontinued free bagels that we used to get every Monday morning; stopped the free personal products that used to be in the ladies room; took away plastic forks/knives/spoons from the pantries. However we still get free unlimited coffee/tea and expresso. Below is what was posted on our intranet:

The Board of Directors recently approved two aggressive, but necessary, cost saving initiatives. Effective immediately:

§ All Principal and Associate Principals have accepted a salary decrease.

§ For all employees (effective January 1, 2009) the firm will temporarily suspend the employer’s 401k match for the calendar year 2009.

We recognize that these measures will have personal impact, but these are extraordinary times and are necessary to protect the financial health of the firm.

We estimate the principal-level salary reductions, the suspension of the 401k match, and the other measures approved by the Board can save about $3M per year. We plan to implement these and the other measures necessary to bring our monthly costs in balance with our projected revenues in the first two weeks of January. These measures—while painful to us all—are necessary to make sure we get through this recession without damaging our ability to emerge from this period as a leading design firm.

At the same time we have stepped up our marketing efforts and have made strategic investments in individuals and offices that we believe will bring us enough new work to get through a challenging 2009.

Work Smart, Spend Smart
As you know, by learning how to “work smart” and “spend smart” we are confident that the firm can emerge from this challenging economic time a better, stronger organization. The Board of Directors approved a number of important cost cutting steps and their budgeted savings that have been detailed on ORCHARD:

§ Spend Smart: expense cuts in food, supplies, flowers, and we will be instituting a centralized purchasing system for all supplies.

§ Work Smart: expense cuts in printing/plotting, express mail, wireless and utilities, and the use of outside consultants and temporary labor/recruiting.

§ Travel Smart: reduction in non-reimbursable travel, elimination of all Business Class tickets, reduction in overseas wireless/voice communication.

Speaking of turning a profit. My company met 96% of projected earnings in 2008. Which is pretty darn good considering the market. But because 09 doesn't look good, they downsized ahead of time.

I was talking to a former co-worker at my old airline just a while ago.

401K stopped being matched. And they laid off the whole of the flight attendant management in Detroit!

So now the manager for the pilots is also managing the flight attendants, something he knows nothing about. Not to mention that a two-man team now manage 4000 people. \

Mi left dem just in time.

Our VP said...'we did the <span style="font-weight: bold">responsible thing, by laying off employees</span>....we must be concerned about our shareholders....'

[b]Private sector sheds 522,000 jobs in January

Private sector employment decreased by 522,000 last month, according to ADP’s national employment report released Wednesday.

The report is compiled from actual payroll data and measures the change in total nonfarm private employment each month.

The report said employment in the service-providing sector fell by 279,000.

Employment in the goods-producing sector dropped by 243,000 -- the 24th consecutive monthly decline -- and the manufacturing industry shed 160,000 positions.

“If you look at it by size of payroll, there was no discrimination here,” said Joel Prakken, chairman of Macroeconomic Advisers LLC, which developed the report. “All jobs in all sectors are in some risk here. A year ago when the economy began to falter, the serious job losses were in larger firms. Now they are spread down into medium and small-sized businesses that did their best to hang on.”

Large businesses, or those with 500 or more workers, saw employment decline 92,000, while medium-size businesses with between 50 and 499 workers declined 255,000. Employment among small-size businesses, with fewer than 50 workers, declined 175,000.

In January, construction employment dropped 83,000, its twenty-second consecutive monthly decline, that brings the total decline in construction jobs since the peak in January 2007 to 923,000.

He predicts the nationwide unemployment rate to rise to 8 percent.

These are all scare tactics which of course seem to be working.
Have the ppl outta work, long enuff that they'll beg to work for an unlivable wage, a wage where they'll be slaves or peasants for the rest of their life.
