What is your point?

What is wrong with accepting &quot;handouts&quot; if the recipient is in need of it? Isn't that a stereotype right there? That is, there is something wrong with accepting &quot;handouts..?&quot; Some people with your attitude are now on the breadline, thanks to the economy; for once upon a time they were financially sound. <span style="font-weight: bold">there but for the grace of God, goes I</span>

There are some who will NOT accept handouts, but will rob and steal to get what they want.

sukie does NOT need the money, and you don't know the circumstances on the train where most if not all the riders are white...should she have created a scene in front of her child; and probably even fulfill another stereotype that blacks are obnoxious and even violent..

In her tale, the Operative words r <span style="font-weight: bold">peace of mind</span>...for that she accepted the DOLE...there are many things she can do with it one being putting it in the church's &quot;poor box&quot; and not caring what the woman or the other passengers thought..

Reminds me of the story where some upper crust military man in uniform was waiting on his car from the valet...some misinformed white folk saw him waiting at the hotel's door and promptly gave him his car keys to park his car, thinking he was the valet in uniform...well, he took them, and whem the valet brought his car, he left with the keys of the misinformed racist...

That to me is better than creating a scene...someone I'm sure, learned a lesson in a subtle yet hard way..

If this is not the first time that it has happened and she thinks she and her daughter are in danger of being assaulted by the kindness of white folks then move.

If she thinks she was getting these offers because she and her daughter were not white enough then bleach.

REread Sukie's tale...it is not so much about accepting a handout as the fact that the giver is white....if you are following her posts here, where she lives is very racist, and that is what IMHO is bothering her, that the stereotype about blacks being needy might have been the motive.

She also mentioned the word Gypsies, not to be stereotypical, but they can be a group to be reckoned with...we don't know what was going on [and not to be speaking for her] in Sukie's mind afterall..[I deliberately overlooked this initially]

This board with past references that some made about people who give handouts in Jamaica and come back and carry on as if that will save the country, and post it here.. when there are more needy in their own country...is fitting to post her concern, for if the ooman grandstanding, there might be some similarity here...as such. the ooman on the train could just be showing off among the other riders...and go brag to har frens how shi gi money to the likkle darkies..WHICH ABSOLUTELY MIGHT NOT BE THE CASE.

So easier said than done...why should she move? Who said the woman is being &quot;kind&quot;...we don't know...Sukie;s reaction is based on her experiences..so her reaction is her reaction' I applaud her for not creating a scene.

See I guess I am reminded of the postings and threads on here (there is less of them these days) Where someone goes to Jamaica and how they took charity to poor people.. and the post where a uniquely educated yanqi told us she was going to save Jamaica with charity.....

I dont mean to be less than charitable.. but when we lived in Africa people would give my daughter money all the time... Also on occasions she who must be obeyed has been out and about with the X's in Scotland and some old lady has chatted to my her complimented her on her children then offered them a pound (Thsi happened with the new born baby)... A couple of these old beddies have said it is a tradition another made the point that they cant offer children sweets anymore.. It also happened once in London when she who must be obeyed was with a white friend of hers both babies received a silver coin.. The white girl claimed it was a old cockney tradition....

You were there so do you think it was ignorance ???

What can be perceived as a kind act by some, might just be a show for a guilt-ridden one who felt the need to do Pennance<span style="font-weight: bold"> publicly</span>...when dealing with racists though [and I again don't know the lady's motives..for all you know, she might have a half black/white grandchild..] ].. but when dealing with them, they tend to see melanin and melanin only...

What I don't understand after reading this whole thread, is <span style="font-weight: bold"> <span style="font-style: italic"> <span style="font-size: 14pt"> <span style="color: #FF0000">WHY WOULD YOU ACCEPT ANYTHING FROM A STRANGER, ANYWAY? </span> </span> </span> </span> When my children were small and someone would offer them anything, I would politely tell them &quot;thanks, but no thanks&quot; then explain that I am trying to keep them safe and to not think it is okay to accept gifts of any type from strangers. <span style="font-weight: bold"> STRANGER DANGER</span> Money is just another &quot;gift&quot; and it gives children the wrong idea that it is okay to get something for nothing.
