Re: Malcolm X: The House Negro vs The Field Negro (Plus Sell
I doubt if the enslaved Africans back then saw 'house' vs 'field' as derogatory. There were far worse words and phrases used on enslaved Africans including some of the names they gave enslaved Africans. I think 'black' people themselves in later years used the said term to add a meaning of insult. Not sure if there were beef between the two camps but some on here already said 'field' slaves would more likely to runaway than the 'house' slaves. Samuel Sharpe sprang to mind as even though ... and wait for it... he was 'properly treated and fed'. Allowed to read and had 'clean' clothes to wear he should have somehow show his appreciation by being happy and wanting to spend the rest of his life as a slave by massa side lol. Can't remember if Sharpe was a 'field' or 'house' enslaved African?
