There used to be a point in time where Jamaicans used to identify themselves as country first.

eg
smaddy would say they are Jamaican Chinese, Jamaican indian, Jamaican white to those who would be puzzled when they heard the jamaican accent from someone they did not think could be jamaican.. - country 1st then race

but now, as in this thread title as a perfect example.. they say chinese jamaicans. Race 1st den country.

Years ago, before I had visited the land of my grandmother, I dated a man from Jamaica. We went to visit his ex-wife and children,(he was a good guy, and kept on good terms with all his exes including me). On our trip, we stopped at a Jamaican restaurant, run by a Chiney Jamaican man <span style="font-weight: bold"> married</span> to a Black Jamaican woman. They had 2 sons, 6' tall, tight-curly hair, looking very Chinese.

I remember as a boy the best friend of our family was a chiney man,mr chin,in those days the majority of chinese men were called &quot;mr chin&quot;..he was one of the most loyal man you could find,did anything for our family...he died years ago but I always remember him,a really lovely person.

Travel the whole island yuh nevah get a poun a rice...they had the power...and if you did get a pound, they called the shots...all married the food items.


They were financially sound...and while they seemed a private bunch, using their language as a means of isolating themselves and preserving their culture intact...they were very much privy to the socio/political happenings of the time[s]...and could influence wheelings and dealings financially on a grander scale..don't for one moment underestimate them.

I personally never saw the Chinese as racists...clannish, yes...but who cuddah speak their language annihow in the early years...but seem more willing to &quot;mix&quot; with the blacks, for afterall we were their clients...if we noh buy saltfish and flowah...don't expext the Jews or whites to do it..and there would go the bizniz...so they needed us and we needed them...

A race a people don't have to hold power to be racist. The BNP has no power and they are a bunch a racists. The racist is a man/women that is your next door neighbor, your co-worker or the man in the street.

A racist is someone that thinks you are inferior to them. Incidentally a person who <span style="font-weight: bold">discriminates or prejudice</span> based on race is a racist. The fact is though some chinese and indians get along with 'blacks' in Jamaica, some chinese and indians do practice racism and it is as real as the nose on wi face. People don't need power to be racist. Log onto any of the thousands of social forums on the net and you will see the racist comments, beliefs and lies against ethnic minorities.

Rich &amp; Poor; Young &amp; Old, Powerful &amp; Powerless have racists amongst them.

So who say it has changed in the wider world?
Obviously there is no <span style="font-family: 'Arial Black'">Jamaica First</span> on this Board. Posters feel quite comfortable talking about Jamaica as a <span style="font-family: 'Arial Black'">Black Country</span> and how Whites/Chinese/Indians have more say than Blacks.
There is no sense that our Motto:

<span style="font-family: 'Arial Black'">Out Of Many One People</span>

is still in vogue.

It is very disgusting.

I have never seen or heard of Chinese Jamaicans burning and looting Black Jamaicans business. If I was Chinese after years of this kind of abuse maybe I would begin to be very suspicious of the intentions of my Black Jamaican neighbours.

You know you are something else. You speak on and on ad naseum about a specific decade in Jamaican history in which FOR ONCE the Whites and near Whites were victimized. Yet you have little to say about the hundreds of years and untold suffering that Black Jamaicans received at the hands of the Whites and near Whites. Now I would be dishonest if I said you never did posts about about poverty and the suffering of Black Jamaicans because you certainly have. I notice that you don't get down to root causes and want to trace everything to the Manley era. Manley and his father did a lot of good for Jamaica and opened up MANY opportunities for ordinary Jamaians. You seem to forget that.

But let's get back to your original question. What is worse burning and looting or tolerating a system in which Black babies die of malnutrition because it is impossible for their parents to provide for them? If you think I am making this up, go visit the children's wards at Jamaican hospitals and see if this is still going on. Since it you are so fixated on the 1970s, I will tell you I know for a FACT that it was going on then.

The Whites and near Whites and their cronies have tolerated a system because it has worked in THEIR favour. This was true during slavery, this was true during British rule after slavery when the Chinese, Syrians, etc. arrived. So some homes and business were torched during slave uprisings and during the 1970s. I am not making light of the suffering that these families endured or of their losses. It wasn't right for them to be targeted in that manner. However, let's put this in perspective. The rich Whites, Jews, Syrians, and Chines folks have done just fine. Their insurance covered their losses. Some re-built in Jamaican. Others migrated to places like Canada where Chinese Jamaicans have HUGE interests in the Jamaican grocery and food businesses..... from impoters to wholesalers to retailers to restaurants. HUGE! Once a baby has died from starvation, he's dead and there is no remedy or recovery.

come to monopolize the market on jamaican/west-indian products in north america?
if you want those products you better go see them- and not one black jamaican has one of these supermarkets...

This is exactly what was done in NAZI Germany, where highly educated persons used historically dishonest arguments to send Jews, Gypsies and other undesirables to the Gas Cambers.

In Jamaica Chinese were attacked in their homes and businesses as early as 60s and as late as the 2008 we still under Blackman Time Now, meaning the State as in Nazi Germany had determined that there need to be a pogrom to rid the Country of the undesirable influence of Whites and other privileged Class on the bias that somehow they were responsible for Africans being held in slavery and being kept from making progress post slavery.

Jamaica did not get its independence until the 1960s, so while the British were in power, some of these ethnic groups were indeed collaborating with the British and enjoying the benefits while Black people suffered.

I am not saying that some of these people did not initially have some hardships. Shows how much you know about our history. As early as the 1960s you say? Think again.
