They went to his house, knocked the door, read him his rights and took him to the city hall jail. He was then taken to another place, went before a judge and before we knew it, he was calling from Jamaica.
This man was an upstanding citizen, worked for the city for over 35 years, had his wife and children here (some migrated, some were born here) and had his pension here.
When he called us, he was already in Jamaica, with NOTHING, as he was not even allowed to go home and get his personal belongings.
His wife very shortly joined him but it was difficult. He was determined to fight the case but received little support/cooperation as his assets were frozen.
He did get a few lawyers, but all they saw was dollar signs and their intention (it seemed) was to milk him dry.
It was UGLY!Comment

but his identity was stolen. couldn't they ascertain from even his past employer who he was?
i just don't know how these things work, but i'm curious.

It boggles the mind SueSumba. We only learned of the stolen ID after his untimely death. We still cannot make sense of the whole thing. It still feels like a crazy nightmare. His kids and wife did everything they could and "the authorities" were just not interested. At one point, it started to play mindgames on all of us, as we had started to believe that he MUST HAVE done something.
These people CAN and WILL do whatever they want to, was what I learned from that experience. Honestly? It made me (and my husband) very suspicious and nervous, and WE have not done anything wrong...yet.Comment
