hi cb - imo, for professional black women, esp those in management/senior positions, the short fro is seen as the less &quot;ethnic&quot; (and therefore more accepted) than twists, braids and cornrows. of course, the permed hair is the most &quot;accepted&quot;.

Three years ago, Ursula Burns, a rising star at Xerox Corp., (XRX-N6.87-0.07-0.94%) took part in a panel of female executives in which the topic of her challenged childhood came up.

She did not come from a classic groomed-for-success background, the moderator pointed out – and that seemed accurate. Ms. Burns is a woman, an African-American and a child of a single-parent family from a lower Manhattan housing project.

But Ms. Burns objected to the easy characterization, <span style="font-weight: bold">displaying the fierce pride that is part of her persona.</span> She said her background actually did prepare her for success.

<span style="font-weight: bold">“I came from a very poor single-parent childhood, but from a woman who was extremely confident, very amazing and had nothing but outstanding expectations of me and my siblings,” Ms. Burns told the panel.

“There was no expectation that I would be anything but great at whatever I did.”</span>

Those expectations were realized spectacularly yesterday when Ms. Burns, a 50-year-old engineer, was designated as the new Xerox CEO, taking over from the incumbent, Anne Mulcahy, on July 1. Ms. Burns will be the first African-American woman to lead a Fortune 500 company.

She will take command of a company that was once the quintessential Old Economy titan weakened by its own hardened arteries and more nimble competitors in printers and copiers, particularly in Asia.

Under Ms. Mulcahy, Xerox crafted a turnaround.

It became a leaner, more adaptable organization with fewer employees. Ms. Burns played a big part of implementing that plan, negotiating with unions on outsourcing and serving in key operating roles up to the moment she was named president in 2007.

That was a clear sign that she would succeed Ms. Mulcahy some day. The only question was timing.

Kevin Warren, president of Xerox Canada Ltd., describes Ms. Burns as “very, very smart. Her ability to process information quickly, and recall, understand and simplify complex issues is absolutely amazing. She is kind of renowned for that.”

Mr. Warren, who worked with Ms. Burns for several years at Xerox's operations in Rochester, N.Y., describes her communication style as straightforward: “When you walk away from a conversation with her, there is very little ambiguity.”

She takes over a company that is much stronger than the near-bankrupt dinosaur Ms. Mulcahy inherited in 2001. Yet even though Xerox has remained profitable, the recession has hammered its printing business, and a relatively strong U.S. dollar has undercut its global sales.

Ms. Burns seems prepared for any eventuality, having risen from a hard-pressed childhood on storied Delancey Street on New York's diverse Lower East Side. <span style="font-weight: bold">She was the middle child of three born to two fathers. Neither man participated much in the family's life, she once told The New York Times, and her mother took in ironing and ran a day care centre from home. Somehow she was able to send all three children to private Catholic schools.</span>

Young Ursula was good at math and crossed the East River to Brooklyn to pursue an engineering degree from the Polytechnic Institute of New York, now part of New York University.

At one point she confided to a journalist that she had wanted a career that would offer the most money after four years of college. In every way, engineering seemed a natural fit. She earned a master's degree from Columbia University – schooling financed in part by Xerox.

Mr. Warren, himself an African-American, says her appointment is to some extent a triumph of Xerox's meritocracy. “Ursula is a very special talent,” he says. “For her to enter the company as an intern, and as an engineer and a woman – period – and rise to the top level says a little bit about the culture of Xerox.”

Mr. Warren says women and minorities, particularly African-Americans, will take considerable pride in the image of someone like them leading a company of Xerox's cachet.

As she rose, Ms. Burns' reputation was that she was never intimidated, including by superiors. “My perspective comes in part from being a New York black lady,” she told the Times. “I know that I'm smart and have opinions that are worth being heard.”

Once established at Xerox, <span style="font-weight: bold">she began dating Lloyd Bean, 20 years older and a star Xerox scientist who had helped develop one of the company's core products, a high-speed colour printer. They married in 1988 and have two children.</span> Mr. Bean is retired from Xerox.

For the past 20 years, Ms. Burns has moved from narrow engineering roles to ever broadening leadership jobs. One key job in the 1990s was serving as executive assistant to former CEO Paul Allaire, which allowed her to travel the world and gain access to all of Xerox.

She admits she has had to resist the temptation to micromanage: “I'm manic, driven and focused to a fault,” she once said. Now she clearly has to step away and see the big picture.
