Afro was introduced to the 'West' by Miriam Makeba...seen as ultra militant indeed especially wen she was married to Stokely..she was 'punished' by the US entertainment community fi dat marriage...Stokely, a Trinidadian is considered the father of the term &quot;Black Power&quot;....

i can remember the first person in Ja dat i knew personally, who cut har low afro..she was one of the first 'stewardesses' fi di newly formed Air Jamaica....DF, graduate of Queens HS and the hairstyle was frowned on bak den by Jcan society....

yes, but wi discussing a black ooman in a high visibility position and her natural hai --- er her corporate/academic accomplishments.

i don't think black men are under the pressures to adjust their appearances to fit the *western mould* the way black women are. if you're anywhere around black women take a good luck and see how many have adjusted their appearances to what is &quot;more acceptable&quot;.

also don't forget that black men in the old days up to the 1960's use to creme their hair (conk) to fit into 'society' as well;

sam cooke was one of the first black entertainers &amp; sidney poitier to break the creme requirement for acceptance
