Bad Mind & Crabs in a Barrel: 2 Reasons we can't Prosper

When people of other groups succeed, they get encouragement, a pat on the back, "Great going Chap!" or "You go girl!" We trip over each other to defend those who are not Black when they do well (recent example the Mahfood thread). However, whenever a Black person does well, the reaction is "never heard of him (or her)". "Who cares?" "That's no big thing" or "When they were 16 they did _____ so whatever else they went on to accomplish in life doesn't count". So between confronting the realities of White racism and the underwhelming level of support from our own, it's no wonder our community continues to struggle. Why are we so quick to discount each other?



Frankly, I am disgusted and I doubt that this will ever change.

Was listening to a talk radio show recently here in Toronto. The hosts are a husband and wife (both white). They were discussing this very topic. A lady from Jamaica phoned in to confirm this reality (blacks not supporting, and even dicouraging fellow blacks so they cannot succeed)in every aspect of life. The two hosts could not wrap their head around it.

Throwback to slavery days mentallity perhaps? Pit the slaves against each other to divide and conqour.

indian folks have told me the same thing about indian people. i've heard this said about chinese people.

i've also heard this sentiment expressed of canadians in general, that we get bad mind when others are successful.

it would be nice one day to think that our black folks don't have the monopoly on negative qualities, that sometimes what we think are qualities that only apply to us are really just broader human nature.

Good point, given our history maybe we tend to over emphasise and define ourselves by these negative qualities. Tall poppy syndrome, is as you rightly point out, part of human nature

naw they dont expect human behaviour they expect superman... to quote Gil Scot-Heron.. there aint no such thing as super man,,,, Malcolm Z made the point.. what is expected of the black man is unrealistic.. he is not expected to have envy, averise or greed.. he is expected to be a saint.. this is crap....

So right MG, that is across board that is rampant amongst my white family and them Swedish. Aunt trying to hold back other Aunt. Cousins being pitted against each other....blah blah blah me jus stay outta a iiee and observe. Set a bleng bleng dem

MGee does have a good point, and yes, I have close blood family members who have tried to hold me back too, in some casses they have succeeded!
