Then there are two economic cultures. In the far east they like to save more and spend less. In the west they like to save less and spend more even to the point of living on credit and boasting 5,6 credit cards. What happened to the old economic theory of "supply and demand??"

funny enough I remember when almost every evening news anchor was touting "buy Japanese cars" and away with the GAS GUZZLERS when there was the "oil crisis" and people had to spend hours on line to buy a tank of gas.

They blamed the long Caddy, the Pontiacs, the Town Cars, name it and claim it for the gas shortage.. . That is all the people wanted to hear. That coupled with the fact that there were many American lemons...lemons like the Pinto and the Gremlin...every brand had a problem...okay...main problem was the "warranty"...many of these American companies didn't offer good warranty, until the courts passed 'THE LEMON LAW" and then consumers started to see some justice.

By this time, many people were already buying foreign cars, Volvos, Jags, Peugots, and those who weren't switched from American to Japanese cars...and the rest is history..

Now that every Tom, Dick and Harry has a car, parking is a problem, and another reason to buy smaller foreign made cars. Too little too late....the asssembly line didn't care; and the companies were insensitive to the complaints and needs of the consumer..,bad business practice that has repercussions...what goes around, comes around.

... as for trade imbalance, can't answer that...it is all a matter of what came first, the chicken or the egg...why are so many Americans buying soooo many foreign made products in the 1st place?

J kid, your points are well taken and they are all valid ones. The US being the "leader" in just about everything post WW2, skip Viet Namn, <span style="font-weight: bold">they won the "Cold War"</span> but where have all the benefits disappeared to? Doesn't seem fair, but they have only themselves to blame... They were really Very Good in most Manufacturing and Industrial products in the period between the 50's anthe 80's, their cars were hot and sold well, they made good Radios and TV's like Zenith, RCA and others. They were #1, took it for granted and believed in their invincibility...

It was no longer great to be doing OK, they brainwashed us into believing that everyone who wanted to be RICH could get rich if they wanted it badly enough. Manufacturers of cars were building cars to fleece the average consumer with "built in absolescence" which made the "BIG 3" and their investors rich at our expense... The German VW started the trend with a modest good vehicle (not for everyone) and then came the Japanese with modest cars then, now luxury, the rest is current history. Sadly, the Americans drop the ball, gave the world "Wall St Financial Skullduggery" the Sub-Prime Debacle, and Ponzi artists like Madoff... We are all now paying the price!!!

Idiotic article BTW. The USA promote travel by road, cheap gas, free choice and muscle cars love. It is not merely forcing Japan to purchase an comparable number of cars. Japan do not even want Japanese Cars clogging up their roads. Japan like Europe encourages Social Transport, Social Services to finance that they tax consumption. The USA would have to massively re-engineer their society to accept less cars from anywhere and pay for the social and other services that Europe and Japan is using the tariff to finance?

But even more idiotic is the idea that we can force comparable/Fair Trade to save one moribund Industry. What if the rest of the places where the USA want fair trade in motor vehicles say, fine well lets extend that the USA Beef/Agriculture products? what about Hollywood Movies, are you willing to take a fair share of our melodramas for the number of showings of the typical Hollywood Black buster imported from the USA?

Reality: YES, America is a society of consumption no doubt. Honesty: However, where else are these foreign countries going to find a more lucrative consumer market to dump their stuff?

If they are soooo self sufficient and don't need America, aor for that matter can dictate to North America, then why are they suffering, and loosing sale along with the North American market.

Oh Yes, pure coincidence that just when North America economy went South, theirs just happen to go south at the same time.

The supply and demand reference should be self-explanatory...after the consumers saw where they were getting chit for their money, saw where their cars were spending more time in the repair shop, they wised up and looked for not SO MUCH CHEAPER CARS, BUT MORE RELIABLE VEHICLES...From this it is easy to see that if people were buying elsewhere, then the "demand" is automatically cut...ie<span style="font-weight: bold"> less sales in the US.</span> Another thing people fail to remember is this, once upon a time, we would change our cars every year...before the "new car smell" left our cars, we were at the auto show, looking for next year's model...people couldn't afford to do that after a while resulting in more slump in sales..<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">

Good point, why bite the hand that feeds you?

The other question is, how many have even joined the Armed Forces to fight for America, willing to sacrifice and even die?

The point is, money talks and BS walks. People wanted a vehicle that could take them from point A to point B without any hassle; so they took their business elsewhere <span style="font-weight: bold">with the blessing of their government</span>.

I dare or double anyone to visit any department store and come back and tell us how many items are<span style="font-weight: bold"> "made in America"</span>...or still yet, how many other products are "Made in Canada" or "Made in England" or still yet, "Made in Jamaica" or "Made in Panama"...almost every striking thing is "Made in China"...even Panasonic to rahcoh lilly is now being "Made in China"...whose fault is that? The consumer? Mi noh think so, not totally at least!!

Coupled wid that...THESE PRODUCTS ARE OBVIOUSLY INFERIOR, from personal experience.

The US government permitted this to happen BECAUSE OF CHEAP LABOUR, plus ENORMOUS PROFITS to be made by the conglomerates who to top it off, get <span style="font-weight: bold">tax abatement</span> for manufacturing overseas.. rather than supporting US workers for decent salaries and benefits..they claim the product would be even more costly if it was "made at home.."

Hogwash and more bull tripe. Now they are trying to UN-outsource some jobs... to STIMULATE THE AMERICAN ECONOMY.. isn't that a scream? I remember when we would have commercials asking us to "buy American"..buy clothing made in the US..HUH? Why do that when it is more chic to sport a Gucci or Fendi made in Italy or even a Pierre Cardin in those days. Delighting in French wines, instead of supporting the vineyards of Nappa Valley, and the list goes on and on..most of this done WITH CREDIT, with no money to pay for them...very impt in the equation. It was just a matter of time before the bukkit battam drap hout.

We are lying in the bed that we made, taking hard knocks, the government helped to screw the consumers LET'S FACE IT...they are not off the hook....<span style="font-weight: bold">again, I do not know anything about trade imbalance</span>..it is now psychological warfare. Agreed... America imho is still a wonderful country to work and live in but it is not perfect and sometimes americans get emotional when their country is criticised. Dem skin thin...

Europe and japan have been leading the way in vehicle technology for a very long time. They have mastered how to build luxury, performance and standard cars focusing on each market sector well. Europe make the best performance and luxury cars in the world and japan make the most reliable standard cars in the world. (watch china - they are starting to manufacture cars aimed at the western market!!!) Where does that leave america - high and dry with only their own american market to push their cars.

I watched pimp my ride the other day and was shock to learn that fake bmw and mercedes etc are being sold legally in america!! (fake front grill and body kit to make it look like the real thing). I have never seen that in britain or even jamaica lol. What does that tell you about americans appetite for foreign cars.

I was actually thinking of buying a chrysler 300C because of its beefy look to roll around london but once I looked at the inside it was dated with 70s-80s design and blocky knobs. Everything was so square and plain inside and the handling in comparison to european cars in its class was poor and petrol consumption would see my hard earn ££££ being blown out the tail pipe as fumes - stopping ever so often at petrol stations.

Chrysler 300C now compare it to a Jaguar XF
