The &quot;ethnic origin&quot; boxes on the forms are usually silly anyway as they're a nonsensical hodge-podge of color and national origin.

They should either be based on color:

<span style="font-weight: bold">[x]</span> Brown
<span style="font-weight: bold">[x]</span> Red
<span style="font-weight: bold">[x]</span> White

or based on origin:

<span style="font-weight: bold">[x]</span> Amerindian
<span style="font-weight: bold">[x]</span> Asian
<span style="font-weight: bold">[x]</span> Australian
<span style="font-weight: bold">[x]</span> European

and not mix, up mix up the different concepts.

Not exhaustive; just to indicate that the lists usually given make absolutely no sense. When is the last time a British-born person of Pakistani origin has been called anything but Asian? Pakistanis do not (nor anyone else for that matter) contest the &quot;Asian&quot; label, yet black people the world over say things like &quot;I'm not African. I'm from &lt;<span style="font-style: italic">insert European/American country or city here</span>&gt;.&quot;

Then there's another bunch who go on about being German-Irish-Dutch-English-Polish-French-Swedish-Italian. What are the differences between &quot;German-Irish-Dutch-English-Polish-French-Swedish-Italian&quot; besides culture and language?

I don't think the issue is about &quot;divide and conquering&quot;. It is not about black vs black. It is about green.

Lets talk money. Segmentation is key to getting marketing dollars. For years people from the Caribbean has been targeted by advertisers with the same ads they would market to a &quot;African American&quot; (I hate this term). Yes we are black and certain products will be uniform however some are not. There has never been a way to quantify how many people are in the Caribbean community in the US. This has been a drawback for Caribbean business who trying to get a piece of the advertising pie.

So lets say you run a Caribbean radio station and you go to XYZ widget company. They will probably say we have a budget for the 20 million &quot;African Americans&quot; in the US. They may ask if you have a estimate on how many of them are from the Caribbean. You have no legit numbers. So they take a chance on you and give you an ad. They probably will not customize the ad to your market as there are figures to justify spending that money to make an ad for your market. They are going to give you the ad with the monotone voice over vs Oliver Samuels (or another Caribbean personality). Because the ad is not customized your listeners ignore. They cannot identify with it. The response to the ad did not meet the need of the advertiser so they never place an ad with you again.

Listen, watch and read the Caribbean media outlets. Now ask yourself how many big companies ads did you see, watch or view.
