I joined way back when by invitation. Me not sure about now, but back then the only way to join was by invitation by someone who'd gained the status to send invitations.

I find it very useful to connect to college friends and previous co-workers.

Professional jobs are advertised there and people use it to source professional advice, make LINKS and find jobs. Many post their resumes and I know a few people who've found high-paying, senior level jobs via the Linkin network.

I think it is definitely not a social site like the others. It is more of a professional site, but that's just my take on it.

It's said to be elite venue for professional networking online. I am pretty sure that you can only still join by invitation only.

Ok. Good. I received an invite and was about to decline as initial reaction it must be one of those facebook/twitteresque type deal... those i have no interest. I will accept the invite then. Thank you DotCom and Stormmey!

I use it. It was a great asset when I was job hunting. I was able to find folks who I worked with in the past that I had lost contact with.

LinkedIn is definitely NOT &quot;just another social networking 'site&quot;.
LinkedIn is a professional networking 'site.

It's rules are severe and stringent. It's very difficult to spam on LinkedIn, and it's impossible to do so for very long. It's never been hacked, and 40 million professionals put their personal information pertinent to business up on it in their profiles.

Most people on the 'site DO put up all of their personal info (the stuff that normally goes on one's resume or CV). The 'site is intended to be a very heavily controlled networking website for business professionals, and it serves very well as just that.

Unlike other networking or social 'sites, however, there are some very strict rules in place to prevent spamming and identity theft. Any person may join, but you only get 3000 invitations for your entire lifetime. you may think that's a lot - but it's not, really, if you're using the 'site correctly. Most users who use it to its full potential use those up within a few short years. And when you do... or, if you're smart, before you use 'em all up... you can still email people privately to ask them if they will invite you to link to them, and they may do that, using their own invitations instead.

The networking method enables any professional access to hundreds of thousands of other professionals who may be useful to him/her professionally, but to whom the person would otherwise never have access.

I am looking for a job as a corporate executive, or a corproate assistant... I don't know the top executives nor the HR people of the top 10 or top 100 companies where I'd like to work. But I may know people (executives elsewhere who know these people I want to know, or former employees or co-workers, etc) who DO know them. I ask one of these people whom I know and am linked to for an introduction to the person(s) to whom I wish to have access; they introduce me to the person or persons, and I suddenly have instant access. I can speak to them about a job. My resume or CV is in my profile, they have access to my former jobs and bosses and co-workers, and they can read the reccomendations left on my profile by everyone who knows me (personal or professional). There are 3 levels of this kind of network linking.
OR
I am looking for vendors and/or buyers for whatever I produce or whatever business or services I am in... I can likewise get referred business in a safe environment. plus, I get access to hundreds of thousands of people whom I didn't know before LinkedIn.
OR
I am looking for employees whom come recommended by people I know and trust... or people my acquaintences know and trust. Remember - with 3 levels deep, I now have access to a million such persons.


So, yes, it's a VERY valuable tool for real businesspersons. Maybe less so to the person with the unimportant low-paid 9-5 5- or 6-day 40-50 hour j.o.b.
I don't remember what you do, SandiF... but if you are a business professional, then it is most definitely a great tool for you.

Here's the catch: The learning curve on LinkedIn is steep!
Three strikes and you're out forever and permanently. no second chance.

If someone IDK's you (I Don't Know)... meaning says that they don't know you when you try to link to them - you're in big trouble. Three IDKs - even just as a joke - and you are banned from LinkedIn permanently. I know LinkedIn trainers whose mothers or siblings thought it would be funny to IDK them... and they nearly got tossed off and banned.

LinkedIn <span style="text-decoration: underline">is</span> complicated, but once you've learned it, it's easier than... say... using the j'com boards.
Most serious users find training seminars to be well owrththeir money. Just like any other tool - LinkedIn is best used by informed and trained users. Just like anything else in Life - you get out of LinkedIn as much or little as you put into it.

Anybody may join LinkedIn, but you can't get anywhere with it unless you invite others and/or ask others privately via regular email first to link with or to you. LinkedIn was never Invitation only for joining. But, like I said, it's not particularly useful if you are alone on the website.

I strongly urge unnu for whom it makes good business sense to find a local trainer, and get at least the basics of training... if you do, it'll pay for itself over and over and over many times in increased business for unnu.

Mr Witchy was just tapped to be a trainer for the business who trained us on LinkedIn.
We were introduced to this company AND to LinkedIn directly by the New Jersey Department of labor, as part of Mr Witchy's Unemployment benefits, earlier this year.
That ^ shows you how useful a business tool LinkedIn can be, if used properly.

I accepted the LinkedIn invitation and created my profile... long and tedious and not even done. Searched for names and found a few folks I know both professionally and personal. I'll play around with it some more.

it's the only networking group i'm relatively active in..it's great for staying connected..some people take it very serious and really develop their contacts and recommendations....


while back smaddy on ya said it was for white people..lol
