you know we can say whatever we want about Oprah and Tyler portraying black ppl in a negative light, but believe it or not, that crap is still going on in today's society...only its not making the 11:00 news. there are a lot of overweight ppl who can't get a job because once they walk in the door, they are discriminated against immediately, regardless of how qualified they are. there are also sick men out there still having sex with their children with no remorse, so forget about hollywood and talk about fixing the problems.

What I am not understanding is for the few that you and I can agree didn’t get their props, that shouldn’t discredit the fact that they have recognized some other good films with strong leading black roles. ...Yes and it goes without saying that the pickings of good black films are small (Funding is limited too). Surely yuh nat gwine to see Madea movies getting a nod and anything to do with Ray Ray and Tyrone Jenkins hanging around the “hood”. What yuh need fi do is praise the black writers and actors who a try bring more complex characters on the screen that dare not “camouflage” the real pains that exists in the black community – DARK as it may be.

Now you haven’t yet seen Precious..as far as you and I know the performances could be REVITING enought to warrant Oscar attention. Then for all the rave reviews , you are going to find that one sector of the black population who may very well be angry ifthis film does not get a nod and then you have another sector (you in that bunch) who a go blaze up gainst the nomination because the characters were not “white-like”. C’mon…. some things have got to give. WE cannot have it both ways

This is one of the concerns the director discussed in depth, at Sundance. Amongst other things, that no one wants to acknowledge how much this ish is going on. How can it be fixed if no one wants to acknowledge it in any way, shape or form?

Yes Tanya - right here in NY.

It was a terrible story.

The mother was / is crushed.

When they interviewed her after the sentencing, and how she looks today compared to a year ago - she looks like she aged 1000 years.

So sad.

i think you have the story a little wrong there- it was his daughter's baby by him that died...but this will compare when they make a movie about it with oscar buzz...this movie is about a girl pregnant by her own father &amp; has HIV and is illiterate;
she also got the ny times magazine cover and it was titled 'the audacity of precious'...kind of like the obama book title

He was recently sentenced.

a movie about a teenager impregnated by her father who bore the child...
and gets aids on top of it...

That is the essence of what I am saying, it looks ugly to us on screen but it somebody’s reality. If I see an actor playing a person inflicted with AIDS and the discrimination and living hell they have to go through to live day to day – that is somebody’s reality. Though it’s not pleasant and we may not be going through that same plight, we can’t hide from it and shouldn’t reprimand the portrayal of these characters.

Now as far as fixing it – the irony of this conversation is that so many of these provocative films that get on the big screen have spawned human intervention and action by activists groups. After the film Philadelphia was made, Tom Hanks himself led a crusade to get the government to get more serious about funding AIDS research. People saw AIDs victims in a whole different light.

Now as for Precious. Maybe a few hearts and mind will be changed on how they treat the overweight, dumb and illetrate. Who knows

So he strangled his 14-year-old daughter with an electrical cord, stripped off her clothes and threw her into the boiler of his apartment building.<span style="color: #FF0000"> An autopsy and DNA revealed that she was 12 weeks pregnant with his child</span>.

Miguel Matias, 36, superintendent of a seven story apartment building on Walton Ave. in The Bronx faces life in prison when he’s sentenced on Nov. 4. Matias has been charged under a new indictment with rape and incest.

Matias has pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the Feb. 16, 2008 death of his daughter, Ana Matias.

Matias had called 911 on Feb. 16, 2008, and told police he had killed his daughter the night previous night after catching her text messaging a boy. He also admitted to killing his daughter to his uncle and sister in a phone call.

He said he had dumped her body into a wooded area.
Police didn’t believe his story and searched his apartment. The corpse of Ana Matias, still burning, was pulled from the boiler of the apartment building. The girl’s clothes were found next to the furnace.

Matias lived in a basement apartment of the building with his girlfriend. The teen, who lived in Pennsylvania with her mother and two siblings, had been visiting her father. Her parents are separated.

Police said that Matias has a history of emotional problems and had once been institutionalized after trying to set a car on fire in Pennsylvania with Anna inside and one of her siblings. The children were uninjured at that time. 10-11-09

i know that but what i'm saying is that it was the baby that died that he threw down the incinerator- his child/grandchild;
not the original daughter who is also the mother of his children/grandchildren...
i believe she is still alive- it was the baby that was killed, not the older girl who he was breeding...
unless we are speaking of two different cases

Wendy – for many, many reasons, one of my favorite movies of all time is a flick called “Once Were Warriors”.

Too long to get into but it’s based on the struggles of a Maori New Zealand family.

When it first came out, the NZ govt fought to ban it. Condemned it. They wanted no light shed some of the lesser know unpleasantries of NZ’s underbelly or some of the struggles the Maori people face.
