Having been around jam.com since dirt was young, I have to agree with Marilyn. There have been many posts from ex pat Jamaicans complaining about tourism and tourists. I must have missed the point where &quot;responsible tourism&quot; was excepted from this discourse. Indeed, I do not remember ever seeing those two words pieced together.

Unfortunately, I do remember many too many posts from expats telling tourists and their ilk how dare they think they have done anything positive for Jamaica by.... oh let's see ... building a well needed school. While I am certain the funds sent back to Jamaica definitely are important to the economy. VERY IMPORTANT, I have never been able to figure out how their money is better than mine.

Of course, I think Jamaica needs to manage itself and its future and I also believe the expats have every right and reason to be involved in that, I would be a little appreciative to not have those individuals despise all that is done by &quot;tourists&quot; and, even more &quot;travelers&quot;.

I disagree. There is a net benefit when you consider that without the industry even as massively pimped as it is by the GOJ we would have to borrow far more to pay the mountain of debt that we have piled up over the years.
The removal of such a huge source of foreign exchange would be immediately felt by all Jamaicans including the baby just born dung a Jubilee ...trust me!

the remittances contribute more to the GDP than does tourism at this point...tourism going poof would be just like banana going poof, bauxite going poof n sugar going poof...not having been jamaican owned in ther first place, the contributions were dependent of wat those who owned it chose to share...

remmember that it was Joahua's hiking of bauxite payment up to 25cents that led to that baklash against the country's national interest </div></div>

And remittances is spread much more egaliterianly than tourism. I dont agree that tourism does not benifit Jamaicans.. I know a number of farmers who supply directly to hotels.. and the renta s do contribute to the economic development... I was anti tourism for a number of years.. But in the last decade I reliase that all the major cities of the world derive a significant income stream from tourism.. We are talking London, Paris, New York, Rome...But my issue is that the infra structire development in these places does and do benifit most people with in the city...

I agree that these cities get a significant income stream from tourism, but these cities <span style="font-weight: bold">have many other stable industries in addition to tourism.</span> Hence they can say they are getting a NET benifit from tourism to their cities. The dollars supplement what is already in place. Yes, these cities would take a hit if they saw a drop in visitors to their cities, but they wouldnt be crippled. I am afraid to say...Jamaica can not say the same.

I think if you ask someone who works at a resort if they would like for it AND THEREFORE their job to go poff, what do you think they would say? I agree with much you have said here.
