oil comps been eyeing Ja's south coast for sometime now.
Mi know dat for a fact cause mi actually got wind of on of them based out of Mass buying property in St. Bess. The source is so reliable that as result two a wi pooled together and bought 8 acre a bush land next to them as we expected either the expansion (which would meck dem want our land, whey = $$$$$) or we can build a little gated on the land and sell/rent homes to workers. Either way the bush will/would worth something soon. hopefully
They had proposed that they were investing in the building of a refinery for crude and manufacture of by products like asphalt, pertro chemical, propane gas, tires, etc, not drilling or extracting oil... but you never know.

We must fight the BP oil spill more like World War III and less like a PR, brand-protection campaign.


Initially, there was too much finger pointing about who was to blame, then who was in charge and then who really is in charge.

The bottom line: BP approves all payments. How much money is paid to fishermen who can't fish? How much is paid to fishing boat crewmen? How much is paid to hotels, restaurants and fishing guides with no customers?

You tell me, who really is in charge? It's like being mugged and allowing the mugger to decide your level of compensation.

Again, we must fight this BP oil spill like WW III. We can start by declaring this a national disaster. The governors need to request this, and the president must approve it. The Stafford Act pays for compensation to people, and the Small Business Administration provides grants.

FEMA provides the governors the things they need to protect the shorelines. The U.S. Coast Guard, the National Guard, along with Department of Defense troops, should be used to help command and control the shoreline and work with each parish, county and major city along the Gulf Coast. All of this needs to be done before the first hurricane.

Remember, Katrina put a 30-foot wall of water on Biloxi, Miss., and created a 17-foot surge in New Orleans. Note the elevation in Tampa is 8 feet, and Miami is 9 feet at its highest point. Any land mass hit with this black tide will be a nightmare scenario.

The USCG and BP have maximum boots on the ground and have a hard time dealing with the Louisiana coast. It will be the same in Mississippi, Alabama and the two sides of Florida. How can we build defenses for hurricane surge along the coast?

We must explore new science to deal with oil in water. Now, BP has the final say on what is used to disperse the oil and mitigate the effects of it. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency needs to start testing good ideas based on good science and allow the new products to be tested. I get several e-mails a day from folks with possible solutions; some are EPA-approved. The concepts are sent to the Stephenson Disaster Management Institute at Louisiana State University, then sent to BP. EPA could use the Gulf Coast land grant colleges to do this testing and pick the best of the lot for use.

We must make sure Congress passes laws that say, &quot;If you have a drilling spill, you can be punished in criminal court if you fail to follow the rules.&quot; We must make sure oil drilling off our coasts is safe. Our regulatory agency should consist of commissioned officers with direct authority to give fines and close a well on the spot - without BP or any other oil company having the right to appeal.

That said, we must still use every available source for oil until some young genius develops new technology that replaces our dependency on oil for transportation and power, etc. In Louisiana alone, we would lose nearly 20 percent of the state's income if we stop oil exploration.

States that allow offshore drilling need a share of federal oil revenue right now. The federal government gets the majority of the funds. I heard from a friend that Exxon was preparing to add 200,000 jobs in Texas and Louisiana over the next two years until the moratorium took place. So, we need to reduce the risk and have good regulations.

We must treat this like a war, not to scare our people but to ensure them that this government can protect them from potential manmade hazards, combined with the ever-present natural disasters that can make matters worse. Governors must mobilize their states to get ready. The BP oil spill has the potential not only to change our lives in Louisiana but to change our culture. Needless to say, thousands of nature's creatures are dying as a result of neglect, arrogance and loose government regulators.

God Bless, America. If we lost the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, it will not measure up to losing this war to protect our people and environment.

Can Fema do what BP is doing ???? What resources do they have to cap a well ?The mugger analogy is wrong.. though plify...

A better analogy is a dotor driving a car hits a person.. get out the car and remidiates the damage..


Does BP have enough resources in place ???? to deal with the well yes.. To clean up ????

Here is the thing.. This well was an exploration well.. that means that they dont know the geology.. they dont know the problems how can they drill a releif well before they drill the main well ???? Drill two wells simulotaneously ???

This letter was in my newspaper today - it says there's an upside to the oilspill:

As anyone reading Farley Mowat’s books on deep-sea salvage knows, pumping oil onto the water calms the sea and stops waves from breaking (Shareholder Value Takes Back Seat In BP’s Gulf Mess – Business, June 15).

From a meteorological point of view, it’s those breaking waves that launch tiny salt crystals into the air that help to naturally sustain cloud and rain formation. Add in the fact that the oil seals in the water and reduces ocean evaporation and together the air over the slicks may become a kind of <span style="font-weight: bold">“aerial desert” that knocks the wind out of incoming hurricanes</span>.

Think about it – hurricane control courtesy of BP. Could there be a corporate silver lining after all?

NEW ORLEANS – Tens of thousands of gallons more oil gushed into the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday after an undersea robot bumped a venting system, forcing BP to remove the cap that had been containing some of the crude.

It was yet another setback in the nine-week effort to stop the gusher, and it came as thick pools of oil washed up on Pensacola Beach in Florida and the Obama administration tried to figure out how to resurrect a six-month moratorium on deepwater drilling.

When the robot bumped the system just before 10 a.m. Wednesday, gas rose through the vent that carries warm water down to prevent ice-like crystals from forming, Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen said.

Crews were checking to see if crystals had formed before putting it back on. BP spokesman Bill Salvin could not say how long that might take.

&quot;We're doing it as quickly as possible,&quot; he said.

Before the problem with the containment cap, it had collected about 700,000 gallons of oil in 24 hours. That's oil that's now pouring into the Gulf. Another 438,000 gallons was burned on the surface by a different system that was not affected by the issue with the cap.

A similar problem doomed the effort to put a bigger containment device over the blown-out well in May. BP had to abandon the four-story box after the crystals called hydrates clogged it, threatening to make it float away.

The smaller cap, which had worked fine until now, had been in place since early June. To get it there, though, crews had to slice away a section of the leaking pipe, meaning the flow of oil could be stronger now than before.

The current worst-case estimate of what's spewing into the Gulf is about 2.5 million gallons a day. Anywhere from 67 million to 127 million gallons have spilled since the April 20 explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig that killed 11 workers and blew out the well 5,000 feet underwater. BP PLC was leasing the rig from owner Transocean Ltd.

Meanwhile, the Obama administration plotted its next steps after U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman in New Orleans overturned its moratorium on new drilling, saying the government simply assumed that because one rig exploded, the others pose an imminent danger, too.

Feldman, a 1983 appointee of President Ronald Reagan, has reported extensive investments in the oil and gas industry, including owning less than $15,000 of Transocean stock, according to financial disclosure reports for 2008, the most recent available. He did not return calls for comment on his investments.

The White House promised an immediate appeal of his ruling. The Interior Department imposed the moratorium last month in the wake of the BP disaster, halting approval of any new permits for deepwater projects and suspending drilling on 33 exploratory wells.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said in a statement that within the next few days he would issue a new order imposing a moratorium that eliminates any doubt it is needed and appropriate.

&quot;It's important that we don't move forward with new drilling until we know it can be done in a safe way,&quot; he told a Senate subcommittee Wednesday.

Several companies, including Shell and Marathon Oil, said they would await the outcome of any appeals before they start drilling again.

Asked about it Wednesday on NBC's &quot;Today&quot; show, BP managing director Bob Dudley said his company will &quot;step back&quot; from the issue while it investigates the rig explosion.

BP said Wednesday that Dudley has been appointed to head the new Gulf Coast Restoration Organization, which is in charge of cleaning up the oil spill. He takes over from BP CEO Tony Hayward, who has been widely criticized for his handling of the crisis.

In Florida, dozens of workers used shovels to scoop up pools of oil that washed up overnight, turning the sand orange.

Tar balls have been reported as far west as Panama City, Fla., and heavier oil is predicted to wash ashore further east along the coast line in the coming days. Oil has also washed up on beaches in Alabama and coated wetlands in Louisiana.
