i addressed that in the reply...if she is into management an based on how she carries herself she should do fine..i know nurses who went there for years on contract to be able to buy homes etc n sekkle demselves ....

the lower the type of work the more open to exploitation...is a difference between living in the home of the employer and being subject to his whims ,an meetin him only in the open in the office setting...

and they tend to hire fellow Muslims from the poor nations fi dem housework jobs deh...bangladese etc...treat them worse dan slaves too..so much fi not being mean to a fellow muslim...


u know dat if u even hit ur own car in ur own garage in say UAE u haffi report it to the police...dem haffi be called fi every likkle ting

i believe u do need a job offer in order to file for urself as a skilled worker. you can visit www.servicecanada.ca and browse job opportunities.

mi deh yah a try look a way fi move back a ja...isnt dat funny. wanty wanty and getti getti. i am so done wid canada. if mi could establish a biz etc in ja mi gone. mi wouldnt even come yah fi holidays too tuff.

so true...u can get pork to buy in Abu Dhabi as a foreigner....u can get liquour...u have to have a license fi di liquor n x bottles a month...

Yes, the supermarkets have a huge sign in one section: PORK, FOR NON-MUSLIMS


My license entitles me to about US$300 worth of drink from the 'off license' each month. Not that I've ever come close to spending that much. The duty on it is low.

Don't you need TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) or equivalent to teach English?

I have it and looked into it in China, wages are only 350 euros a month though, ok, the standard of living is comparable, but on that you won't be able to save much for when you come back.

What I know about Dubai is that if you lose your job, you have to leave immediately, apparently the airport car park is full of abandoned cars.

Young people from recession-hit countries in Europe - Ireland, Greece, Spain, etc - are leaving in droves to find work overseas too. Graduates willing to do washing-up jobs, they're that desperate.

I believe English teachers aren't very well paid in Dubai.

What you don't know about Dubai is, you won't have to leave immediately. You can stay as along as you like if your former employer doesn't cancel your visa; and they'll only do that if you fell out in a bad way.

And even if they do cancel your visa, having a western passport means you can fly out (within 40 days) and fly straight back in then look for another job. If you haven't found one within two months; fly out and fly in again.

I started my new job four months ago and I'm STILL on my old company's visa...

Yes, there are abandoned cars at the airport but I wouldn't say 'full'.

But just like everywhere, there's a recession on and the collapse of Dubai's property market just made things worse.

The main question is if you are looking to migrate permanently, or are you just looking for a job to build up your resume and then move on?

If you are looking for a permanent move then I would recommend places like Canada, US, or Australia. The latter has a UNDER-employment problem and is willing to give you residency if you have certain skills that they are desperately looking for. I believe that after two years you can also get a passport. Depending on where you settle, the weather is nice most of the year, and place is clean and pretty, and the locals are tolerable. There is a few Jamaicans there as well, although not on the scale of CA, US, UK.

Places like Dubai are just for a while and not permanent. I would only come to Dubai with a job offer in hand, and stay away from any &quot;entry-level&quot; position. They quality of life for expats in Dubai can vary from modern day slavery to highlife and you really need to do your research very carefully so that you don't end up in a position that you wish you never had.

The critical thing to considere is whether the job comes with &quot;accomodation&quot; and if not how much is the 'living allowance'. The rents (although 50% less than 2 years ago) are still very high for what you get. The company accomodation even for what seem like management position can look like the ghetto. Granted the place is safe and nothing will happen to you living in a Dubai ghatto, but why would you move halfway accross the world for this?

Another aspect is the lack of laws to protect the employee. The government leaves it up to the employer to decided what happens to you if you get sick for example. My employer in my department is famous for taking care us if we get sick, and I know colleagues that were out of work for 2 years collecting full salary and getting free medical care.

However a friend recently joined a major hotel in Dubai in the service industry and got sick. She is now getting fired for 'faking sickness' even though the doctors advised rest and medication. The same person was also in a car accident the second day after arriving Dubai, in a taxi, on the way to company traininig. When she called from the hospital to advise her boss of the situation, she was told that if she misses the training she will be fired.

So you really have to talk to people from the company you are to join and get the scoop on the situation. With Dubai you either will be very happy or very unhappy and there is a fine line in between.
