thank goodness. flogging is a holdover from slavery. however, i hope the system equips teachers thru training and other means to maintain discipline in the classroom. i feel it will get worse before it gets better, tho.

It is way overdue. Enough Jamaican school children have been brutalized by teachers, many of them growing into dysfunctional adults. Take Wahalla, for example.

violence begets violence....my granmere favourite method of punishment was licks with the wooden spoon....rain all over your body.....@ sixteen she tried doing the same thing.....brite I ran to the backyard (she think i was running from her) i went to the pile of wood for the fireplace.....grab one an rain some licks pon her I bruk 2 of her finga she start crying I start crying .....neway.....she never hit me again.

Franksterr....I may be wrong but I think when you are paying a tuition it is a different scenario.....dem cudden nevva brite want to rain licks pon yu..... a so assuming ofcourse that when you say private schools you mean parents/guardian have to pay tuition. In Canada if a teacher hits a kid....Cops and Child Welfare service get involved

In my day sister used to give caneing- tuition or not (catholic prep school)

i doubt that them still do it these days though. My son briefly attended a prep school in JA and me never hear him talk bout it happening ..but maybe is cause him just good like him modda

I object to being called disfucntional... I beleive it is perfectly acceptable behaviour to murder any one who insults me, rip the heart out of anyone who is rude, as for any one who touches me in anger castration is but the first step.....as for making a living as a mercenary that is a long and honourable tradtion...

(Living in Kanada is the epifony of disfunctional behaviour!)

j-kid, corporal punishment is still very much at play in school and home in jamaica right now, not outlawed yet (in school). so if u want to draw a correlation between violence in society today and flogging, there is a pretty direct one, i'd say.

Yuh rite CB, dem neva care how much money yuh parents did ah pay dem, dem would bus yuh shut same way. Even hav di nerve fi telll yuh, &quot;noh com back til yuh bring yuh parents fi com talk tuh dem&quot;. Yuh lucky, if yuh noh get wan nedda assen wen yuh get home tuh! I am against teachers hitting any one.. My experience in Jamaica not withstanding... I bbeleive there has to be a gradation of censure.. if it is agreed a step process then there may be value in corpral punishment <span style="color: #FF0000">&quot;provided the parent agrees&quot;</span>.

Jamaica there is little in place to direct, teachers are faced with large classes, badly socialised children. lack of resources to manage.. taking away the sanction without alternatives are idiotic... it is a bad solution but what others is available ?????

The other question is if a teacher hit my child like I was struck what would I do ? I would in the first instance sue the teacher, bring assult charges.. in Jamaica these would be dismissed.. Can any one tell me of a case where a teacher has ever been charged with assult because I know even since the law it still happens..

Once the charge and procecution fails what censure is available to the out raged parents????except pick up some thing and get personal and wet...

my grandmother went to school to cuss off a teacher for unfairly beating my mother. however, my grandmother was unusual in that she didnt think teachers were god.

in my day, kids got beating for not having right answers, for being late, for stepping out of line, for a whole bunch of reasons unrelated to them being &quot;bad&quot;. the idea was not to punish bad behaviour, but teach kids thru floggings that there was authority in the society, and that they must submit. slave metaphor.

I really wish I could have meet up again with a certain teacher who beat me with a belt,doesnt matter how old she is now I would take a belt and give the sadistic b!tch a taste of her own medicine.
