.. the one that may NOt have made the news is an Iranian girl I worked with who was telling me about her experiences in Iran and about being jailed for not only not covering her face, but for going to a party..

you are playing fast and lose with the facts and interpretation of the facts...you linked two versions of the story about lecturers at a Islamic university being forced to wear the burka..isnt that similar to a lecturer at a Jewish university being expected to wear a yarmulke? or the lecturers at the Vatican college wearing their priestly robes.

you friend was jailed for not covering her face or not covering her head? or was it something more to do with the party she attended (alcohol?)

I am all for religious freedom as long as you aren't harming anyone, but quite frankly I cannot stand those full face veils. I feel about as comfortable around them as I would with a man walking in QT wearing a ski mask in July.

We have a had a couple of law suits here over them being asked to remove them to take a driver's license pic or state ID pic and at least one by a school teacher.

I wouldn't let you wash my dog much less teach a child of mine if I can't get a good look at your face.

i think france had banned the turbans of sikhs in schools wha day too...

i don't know the latest status on that...
but my experience in france was not great...i found the authorities cartoonishly anti-immigrant

the thing is i think most of these women want to wear their religious gear...

most people think it is forced on them (which i'm sure it is in some instances) but for the most part i think these women wear it voluntarily due to their cultural &amp; religious indoctrination

i have a friend who just returned form a few years working int he middle east..she said she felt a lot more comfortable wearing a head covering than not wearing one when in public.

when not wearing ahead covering people stare at you like they would here if you were walking down the street in your underwear is how she put it.

the modest ones are very pretty. but the entire ninja look with the eye covering is very depressing visually and not because it's black, but my god they don't even accessorize.

well some women here do walk around the street in practically their underwear;
i can understand the fact that some societies take issue with the covering of the face...
it is what it is; i'm pretty sure you can't go to many muslim nations running around in mini-skirt, tights or [censored]-[censored] shorts

.. so say your &quot;friend&quot; was visiting a nudist colony (or just walking a nude beach.. <span style="font-style: italic">something some of us can relate </span>).. would it not be natural for your fully clothed friend to feel uncomfortable in a community of naked people?
Depending on her inhibitions, she may (or may not) remove her clothes so as to blend in.. Its natural human nature to feel uncomfortable in both senarios..

Did your friend continue to wear the Burqa upon returning to Canada? or was it that it made her feel so (religiously) &quot;comfortable&quot; that she continued to do so?

It would be interesting to observe the stance if the Nudist should decide to roam naked in the streets of Toronto..

i think specificity is important in this discussion.

many faith traditions require a head covering for woman ...is there a problem with those too?

i think it's the covering of all the face except the eyes (in the case of the hijab and niqab) that is at issue.

france is a fiercely secular country. i hear they even look at u strange if u wear a cross that's big.
