Addition to that reply: Some historians think John Caesar- called "Black Caesar", and originally arrested and transported for stealing 12 pounds from a boarding house in Kent, England, was actually from Madagascar. No one's sure what nationality he was, whether Madagascan or Jamaican./i] There's no record of his parents' names, but he was born in approximately 1764 and escaped slavery by coming to Britain (a lot of people did that). He formed a gang of "bolters"- escapees from prison at Port Jackson- he escaped because of the very small rations that the convicts were given, and he was literally a big man, apparently. He was originally a domestic servant and became a thief for extra money. Really fascinating- especially since most of the convicts we learn about were White and I doubt your average Australian school kid learning about convicts in Year 4 has heard about him.
