This is a battle I would fight. Unless you've had some better opportunity in mind and were just waiting for the final straw to push you into a better position.

Otherwise, she will keep on making you miserable unless you push back her foolishness.

Cover your six. Don't let her catch you out on a silly mistake.
Document everything she leaves exposed and can be used in your case later.
Make sure you know your field of play well, and anytime she asks you for something that is more limiting or ourside of the field of play, ask her to show you in writing, or you show her that she's wrong. I wouldn't approach HR or her boss until you have some ammuniton "witnesses, email trail,and preferably a cost to the company as a result of her bad management.

the issue is that the person on my team has been picked for a corporate management training program, and the message from corporate to me as her manager is to support her by providing opportunities.

Simple arrange a kick off meeting with her, the director HR and the person who is on the way to the top. Lay out the plan for the training participation. Focus on the aspects that u fear. Take minutes of the meeting with action points. Develop gant chart of the persons progress. Identify the gates through which the person must pass through. Empersis that there will be mointoring of the progress. IE U SIGN off and Hr approves the director confirms. The idea is that must be made that the reluctant party is not in the postion of power u r. she is simply a service providerr u r the progress manager.
u state for the record all communicatikn must be written and recorded as people are streched and unless this is the case things slip through.

U then send minutes ou for approval. With a statement that they all need to confirm the minutes as a true reflection of the meeting. And they must confirm within 48 hours or ur record is the record. u put in a couple ofmis information. ie like she was did not approve of training.


u must go to the director and Hr before the meeting and outline the plan. U must emphersis that this simply needs their aproval u are doing the heavy lifting. Appeal to the Directors ego on mentoring the team member. However emlhersis that u need their influence and buy in in breaking internal inertia at internal development.

Basically u r sideling the female. But u take sole ownership of the project? for management training is a project.

But mi nuh do career development. Mi ah dutty day labourer. so mi nuh too smart at this thing.

MGee, in similar situations, the most successful tactics that I've used are:

1. <span style="font-weight: bold">Think with the end in mind</span>

2. <span style="font-weight: bold">Take this opportunity to teach</span>

Caution: She might not know as much as you are giving her credit for.

You know what you would like the outcome to be, so meticulously steer the ship towards that outcome. In order to do that, you might need to ignore her insecurities, inabilities and lack of professionalism and TEACH her how to be a better manager/co-worker and Person. Teach her what you know and she does not. When you teach you learn again anyway, so it is an opportunity all around.

You can hardly go wrong by incorporating similar effective techniques, because no matter what she says or does, she might win her small insignificant &quot;I am boss&quot; battles, but in the end, you will win the war.

Wow... I just caught up on reading this thread and my eyes are wide open wid di audacity of this woman. Mi not even know what to say cause soh many people have given you enough food for thought.

All I know ..I haven't read anything to suggest you haven't acted appropriately and within your bounds. Wish you luck Mgee... but you cannot allow one person to derail all that you have worked hard to accomplish.

When a nail sticks out, it gets hammered. You are a star in the organization and you stick out...that's why you are being hammered. But I tell you what, not all nails stay down ..the determined ones do pop back up. Read between the metaphors.
