Patois: Are they faking it to sound cool?

This is inspired by Xavier. Xavier asked if a guy was twanging it in a recent thread. I have a question about faking it.

At the beginning of the video (which I love by the way), Jerry Brown's accent does not sound strong at all but on this tape when he starts talking to the British guy, his accent is stronger. This was one of Jerry Brown's hits as a member of The Jamaicans before he moved to Toronto:

I also saw Jackie Mittoo perform once in Toronto. When he spoke his accent didn't sound strong. He is no longer with us (sadly).

When all of the guys get together, all of a sudden their accents are super strong. Listen starting at 6:00 and also at the beginning of the second tape when they are in the studio.

Are they trying to out cool each other for the camera or earlier was he just trying to speak clearly for the interviewer?

By the way it's wonderful that, after he moved to Toronto, Jerry got to fulfill his dream of having his own studio.

Wouldn't the accent of many Jamaicans vary in strength depending on the situation we find ourselves in and who we are speaking to ? For example, when speaking with family members back home, some non-Jamaicans might find it difficult to follow any of what I am saying but if I am at a meeting at work with persons from another tribe there may be no accent at all. Isn't this quite normal as opposed to &quot;faking&quot; ?

Tropicana don't realize that Jamaicans use patois like a second language. And have the ability to switch as effortly as any person who speak more than one language.

I heard Ba Ba Boom Boom in Chipotle (yes that Chipotle, the Mexican grill) this past week. It never sounded better blaring over a loud speaker on a hot summer-like day and I realized I don't have it in my collection and I promised to download it ASAP. By the way Chipotle must have a Jamaican selector because they have been playing some wicked tunes whenever I go there for lunch. I've heard them play in the last few weeks or so - Cherry Oh Baby, Pass the Dutchie, Solidarity, Conscious Party, One Blood to name a few.

I don't think he is faking the accent. It is just who he is talking to at the moment. When you're with your peeps as opposed to at the office in a meeting you probably take on different voices too.

Dr. Dudd, of course I realize but these guys sound so VERY different from one part of the video to another that I wondered if they were laying it on extra thick at times.

Not necessarily. You would be surprised. I saw this in a small town in Germany. I was quite surprised to see this.

One day I was walking along St. Lawrence St. in Montreal and I heard the most wonderful dub coming from a club. So, I went upstairs. It was a White French Canadian guy. He had all the dub and DJ classics. He plays ever Monday night. Everyone in the club was White and they were mostly French. They didn't know how to dance it though...they were doing Hip Hop moves but clearly enjoying themselves.

Jamaicans twang so that foreigners can understand us.

The strongest accent we use will usually be our natural accent that we grew up speaking.

The other accents are waht we have learned to do for others out of our society and for formal contexts.

How can you fake what is your own?

I'm not saying they are faking it. I am asking. Okay so on the video when the guys are talking to each other, do you think they are closest to their most natural and authentic pattern of speech. It's interesting because to me at the beginning of the video he sounded closer to the type of Jamaican accent I was used to hearing growing up. Later on it sounded like they were just laying it on thick to sound cool. Interesting. Also, the older people in Jamaica sound very different to me from the young people.

Jerry was definitely more relaxed when talking to the English guy and he was clearly in his element and having a ball in the studio. Jackie Mittoo was really enjoying himself and getting into it. He threw his whole body into it.

Jamaicans are notorious for losing their accent when they go to foreign but they don't realise it. My father was suprised they could tell he wasn't a resident when he went back to Jamaica but it was obvious to me he no longer had a natural Jamaican accent.

The accent you are used to is the twanging accent.

Not bad, but something about the General Good accent sounds exaggerated. The accent kinda reminds me of that Canadian rapper Snow from the 90s.

Well considering these guys are German it's surprising how well they're doing. I wish I could remember the French Canadian guys name. He told me.
