If I had explicitly stated the race, some people would have been up in arms. Sometimes it is necessary to read between the lines. Not everything can be spelled out.

Opponents of the Electoral College system also point to the risk of socalled "faithless" Electors. A "faithless Elector" is one who is pledged tovote for his party's candidate for president but nevertheless votes for
another candidate. There have been 7 such Electors in this century and as
recently as 1988 when a Democrat Elector in the State of West Virginia cast
his votes for Lloyd Bensen for president and Michael Dukakis for vice
president instead of the other way around. Faithless Electors have never
changed the outcome of an election, though, simply because most often their
purpose is to make a statement rather than make a difference. That is to
say, when the electoral vote outcome is so obviously going to be for one
candidate or the other, an occasional Elector casts a vote for some personal
favorite knowing full well that it will not make a difference in the result.
Still, if the prospect of a faithless Elector is so fearsome as to warrant a
Constitutional amendment, then it is possible to solve the problem without
abolishing the Electoral College merely by eliminating the individual
Electors in favor of a purely mathematical process (since the individual
Electors are no longer essential to its operation).

To those of you questioning the Electoral College: How is the "non-election" of the US President less direct than the "non-election" of the Prime Minister in parliamentary systems?

Usually the head of the party winning the majority of seats in parliament is named head of the government by the (sometimes elected or sometimes not) head of state. In some countries the head of government also has a seat in parliament, but not always so they are never elected by anyone at all!

Blackstar, you asked why I did not comment on the electoral college thread. It's the pure ignorance of certain individuals involved that led me to make the decision of not to participate in such ignorance. Peasie was the only voice of reason, but probably stopped posting because of the usual nonsense. It simply turned into another thread of let's beat up and put down the US, the people that live there, the founding fathers and the system of government implemented etc. etc. etc.
Simply because certain people lack the patience or intelligence to understand the system....somethings just boggle the mind.

Hey I started the electoral college thread and I never beat up anyone. I didn't grow up in the USA and learned a little about it at Grad school in the US. It was election time so I asked some questions and quoted dutifully from the Founding Fathers. Even said they occupy a sacred position. Nothing has been said in here that is not true. So what is your problem sir?
