What is the purpose of a discussion board?

I feel the exact opposite to you Tropi.

If we are discussing a certain somebody in the news and posting opinions, I would appreciate the subject of the discussion posting their side of the story. I would see nothing wrong if someone wanted to email the individual(s) involved and inviting them to join our discussion. If they did decide to join our discussion it would be at their own discretion. I think we need to encourage this type of thing, we should not be trying to eliminate it.

I am too tired to hash out this thread tonight but will go through it tomorrow. After skimming the thread I am just having a hard time making the connection between posting your opinions and worrying that the subject or subjects of those opinions may be invited to share their views here. After all, people have been writing editorials in newspapers for centuries and the subjects of those editorials have often replied with rebuttals.

Anyway, I look forward to reading more about your concerns tomorrow.

No he said he contacted the person made her aware of the post and encouraged her to come and participate. That is HIGHLY inappropriate. Members would not have been as free with their comments if they had known this was going to happen. I have deleted all of my comments about the situation...that's for sure. Lonewolf had absolutely no business doing that.

Yes same story applies to CEO...many boardites have their own business and don't want their company information and contact coordinates plastered all over a discussion board where they are using a fake ID and an avatar. In a way that is even worse as it could potentially impact their livelihood.

Parameters need to be clear. We have had guests before and those are valuable exchanges but there should be a protocol. here is a HUGE difference between what one is comfortable saying when they are just shooting the breeze in relaxing, fun, casual, and anonymous discussion and what one would say in a serious discussion with the subject of a news story.

If a discussion starts out:

- we are going to have a discussion with _______ about ______ that has recently been featured in the news

it's a different story from

- casually shooting the breeze and some troublemaker taking it upon themselves to contact someone to bun fiyah because they are loosing an argument or unhappy with some of the views expressed - how immature

Definitely is subjects of news stories are to be contacted and involved in discussions, this should be clearly identified when a discussion is started as it will affect the tone and content of the discussion. I personally feel that members should have to get permission form admins before extending this type of invitation and it should be at the outset of the discussion not out of the blue to make mischief once the discussion has started.
