Reggae+ Dad, death is just a transformation or a vehicle from `this` to `another`. It is sad because we will miss seeing each other in `this` one. Then one day we too will go over to the other where we will continue living as he too will, even though he may not be around.
Death is not the worst that can ever happen, when it comes try be prepared first by accepting that life is only part way the journey to eternity.
Your concern is unselfishly and exclusive for your hero.
Concerns go out for you too my brother, to remain strong and focussed.

I know that you are going through an awful time right now but just remember that there are people who are deeply concerned for you and your DAD.
I hope you can find solace in that fact and remain strong and have great courage.
Remember death is only another part of life's process and we all have to go through it someday. It is now your Dad's time.
My prayers are with you always and I hope that you and your family will find comfort and be strong and courageous.

Be unto you and your father. I just read your post and it sounds as if your father is a lion.To live 86 yrs. is a good thing and just by the few things you said it sounds as if your dad has lived them to his fullest.
Just let him now you love him look back on some happy times and be there as much as you can.There as no words, but as your there for your father keep your closet there for you.

As is the case with many hospitals these days...Dad is still waiting for his operation. After going through the various ultra sound stuff and tests...
...It looks like it is his appendix and NOT the big C.
Mind you, as his ability to recover from simple scrapes and cuts is sadly diminished by the leukemia...this will not be a walk in the park. I am far more hopeful this morning though. Thanks for the support, the prayers, the encouragement.
Believe me...I am aware that life on earth is but a stop-over on the endless road...That death is life...I'm just not sure that it's such as easy realization or sinting to accept when you're the one knock knock knockin' on Heaven's door.
My Dad has never said a nasty word in his life about peoples of different origins, religions, races, nationalities. He is a kind soul and he has been a great roll model and inspiration. He is one with nature and with God. I have NO fear for his soul and I know that he will be moving forward in a positive fashion when his time does come. I will discuss with him how he feels about THAT in the coming days.
I find it difficult to approach the subject though. Because when you start to talk with someone, who is closing in on this life's final moments, about such matters you verify to them that you too have given up on much of a future for here. I don't want to give Dad the feeling that I am writing him off...so to speak. Because he is such a LION...He may well overcome this obstacle and carry on for a good little while yet.
I have always told him that his life is his life and that I will never tell him what he can or can not do. It does look like I must now tell him though, that the time has come for him to move in with us and to say adios to his house and life on his own. It will take him a long while to recover from the operation. GOD...I ask that when they open him up...there will be no untoward 'surprises'.
I was kind of in shock yesterday afternoon and last night...But...Today is looking a fair bit brighter. Thanks again.

I do not know anything about dying nor what words of comfort to say to you.
Your father seems to be a very courageous person, with regards to his illness and his independence. So, I believe the only thing that would bother him now is the thought of leaving you and your children--I guess the only thing you can do is to assure him that you will all be okay.

I'm sorry that I was away and didn't have time to pop in and read this thread, It sounds like your father is indeed a strong man. And it is great to hear that it is his apendix not the big C as you put it, it sounds like if anyone has the strength to pull through he does.
I don't have any great words of wisdom unfortunately, for if and when the time comes. I wish I did. There is a book however that I read when my grandfather passed on that provided me with some insight and ways of helping him deal with it. It's called On Death and Dying by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, You may have already read it or heard of it. She has spent a great deal of her life working with terminally ill people helping them make the journey at lifes end. I highly recomend reading this book.
Also the Tibetan book of the dead . I read some of it to my grandfather when he was passing, even though he was a JW he found the words about making the journey very comforting.
I agree with all that has been said here about your companionship and support being the most important thing.

Hey Reggae+, sorry to hear about your Dad.
Has his weight loss been alot?
I suspect you are as preparped, as anyone can be for the end.
I spent all my time with my late husband when he was dying. If he slows down in conversation, you don't have to talk. Do the odd touch, and watch a hockey game, or read him the newspaper. He CAN hear you.
Simple is good.
(now, one of the nurses, did mention that it was ok, to talk about the end) one morning his feet/hands were cold and blue. The time was soon. So I bent down, and told him it was ok to go, i'd look after the house and dogs, and that i would catch him later...
Then I sat down, and waited in utter terror as the next 3 hrs passed and he died in my arms at home.
Hope this is not too down presser, but its the truth as I have lived it.
You are a big kind hearted man, you know what to do.

If it helps at all my dads dad had surgury for colon cancer 10 years ago and he's still going strong it hasn't come back. He's on a resticted diet, but he came out of it ok. I hope deffinately that the outcome is the same for your dad.
I'm very sorry to hear that, geezze I wish I had some words that would do something now
