If you go back and read what you wrote really well, you did in fact say to the conclusion that slavery made the white male wealthy and society at large. From this wealth we have education and live in houses. We are better off that our forefathers. We have benefited and have opportunities to earn a living.

By logic, thanks to slavery that I now have education, a home, opportunities to earn a living. Thanks to the blood sweat and tears of my forefathers.

What was derived post slave era, the industrial revolution benefitted not only Europeans, benefitted former slaves too, ask Carver and many others who took advantage of the technology available at the time as basic fork and hoe agriculture was seconded to what the mechanics of the new revolution brought.
The social aspect was quite another thing and thats where the church and where morality has come forth, hence Rev Martin Luther King and many others before and after him who have helped make the Black man a man by hiw own means and not property shackled from his own land and taken away to do the work the whiteman could never do under the sun.

Well I guess you just wanted to add your piece because the topic is in fact, "if slavery never happened". A lot of what you say is revolting because it ignores the former existance of the Africans to say the least. It is also out of context because in order to see what I have benefited I must look at what I had before. If something was lost then what I have now should be better that what I had before to be considered a benefit.

Slavery did exist Comparing what slavery in it self was and those who are now products of that era, you have gained opportunity. As a matter of fact you have gained thus more opportunity by leaving Jamaica and relocating to North America all this being on the path post slavery era. Whether how minor or how great, you have benefitted.

You dont have to be thankful when destiny already decided your fate. No matter what even if slavery never happened, you have benefitted and opportunity has come your way.

If slavery did not happen, we could all sit and dream like the great thinkers that so boldly dwell around today about what it could have been like yesterday.

...it would be incorporated in Washington DC on July 1 1977 and open its offices the following spring on Dupont Circle. It would be called TransAfrica and I would become its executive director.

The idea for TransAfrica grew out of the broadly recognized need for an institutional mechanism through which African-Americans could be informed, galvanized and moved to a focused, thoughtful participation in the formulation of US foreign policy toward Africa and the Caribbean.

It would prove to be a difficult challenge.

Americans (unfortunately including African-Americans) knew little about Africa and the Caribbean.

They know even less about their nation's tradition of shameful attitudes and actions in these areas, a tradition often bellied by the much ballyhooed image of America as a benificient, compassionate, and freedom-loving superpowere. By the mid-1970s the mortar in American Cold War policies toward Africa had hardened into an impreganable barrier to anything but minor revision. The African benificiaries of exceptional US largesse were, to a man, corrupt and undemocratic tyrants who, promted by Washington, conveniently described themselves as anti-communist. They ruled in the handful of African countries deemed strategically useful to the US. Routinely, and with American blessing, they quashed any hint of dissent. To the rest of Africa's new nations emerging unsteadily from colonialism, the United Nations showed relative penuriousness if not total indifference. At the Department of State, Africa was policy afterthought- and has largely remained so through Republican and Democratic administrations alike.

'...i had had no foreknowledge of the toll colonialism had taken. Then , too , no people have a totally uniform view. Tanzanians, led by a rare man, were as varied of trait as African -Americans - or any other group of two or more people, for that matter. They were liberal and conservative, friendly and unfriendly, globalist and provincial, self-loving and self- loathing. The symptoms fo the last condition were not unfamiliar to me.

I might as well have been sitting in the Globe Theatre on Second Street twenty years before with Max and Uncle Jim the projectionist. But I wasn't in the Globe. I was in the Indian-owned Dar es Salaam downtown movie theatre for a rare screening of a non-Indian-language film. (That the vast majority of Tanzanians could not understand Hindi and other Indian dialects appeared not to affect film selection by the Indian owners who, like all other Indains in Tanzanie, spoke and understood English.) The English-language feature was preceded by an an English-language commercial with Tanzanian actors. The young Tanzanian male executive in the commercial needed every edge in an effort to win professional success and the heart of a beautiful African woman.. THe executive's male colleague advised his troubled frien to use Ambi lotion. "It will make your skin lighter and make you brighte."

Such experiences gave me a broadened common ground with Tanzanians, drew me closer to Africa's sufferings and it to mine,suffering that I would come to see over time as indistinguishable, one and the same.

I might have stayed comfortably in Tanzania for years. It would have been an enriching and life-changing time.

But i would always be a guest at an ancestral family table:
a long-gone son involuntarily reacculturated in a far-offland. I could never be Tanzanian for the simple reason that i had not been born there, socialized in its mores and inconspicuously woven, throughout my formative years, into the rich mosaic of its culture. While I would always be African, linked indissolubly in soul and spirit to these people and this precious land I had been blessed to touch, my working and living place would be in a land that had become mine centuries ago through Goree's door.'.....
