Please clarify. Would love to hear your views since you've been to Japan. What patterns did you observe there? I am not aware of White women flocking there for sex tourims. Are you? White guys are certainly going there looking for women who they feel will be subservient both for marriage and flings.

I agree Serenity. I too wish the trade was stamped out. Ignoring it won't make it go away and I was just curious to know if you had observed any patterns when you were in Japan.


Very informative article. No 40Legz, I never heard about Lucie Blackman. I am familiar with the hostess bars and dohans as there have been a number of documentaries about it. There are a number of French Canadian women working over there in hostess bars too.

I already knew about the blonde thing....for a while there were Asian women with blonde wigs (or hair dyed blonde) and blue contact lenses who were very popular in the hostess bars. Apparently they are not so popular.


I didn't see any when I was in Tokyo. Apparently, they are on the back streets. I did go down some backstreets in Ginza and Shinagawa but I didn't see any hostess bars. If they don't bring in enough dohans, they get fired.

In Kyoto, I did notice a couple of brothels in the Gion district. One had 2 Asian girls at the door with a man in top hat, tux and tails calling out to the men in Japanese as they passed by. One girl was dressed like a bride, the other in evening wear. I ran into a girl in a French barmaid's outfit giving out inviation cards to the men who passed by. I didn't see any hostess bars with White hostesses. I did see some geisha houses.

Before she entered government, Fukushima in 1989 helped establish a private center called Help, which has assisted more than 2,000 women�most of them Asian but including an increasing number from Russia and South America�who have suffered from abuses such as coerced prostitution, physical intimidation and assault. Fukushima says, "I have taken foreign women who have been beaten up to the police or to the immigration department who have said to my face, 'What are you doing here? These women are here illegally.'" She adds that the officials try to justify turning away such cases, arguing: "What were these women expecting when they came here illegally?"

What is most troubling, says Fukushima, are the foreign women, mostly Asian, who have disappeared or died under mysterious circumstances over the years. "They are undocumented, so we don't have good numbers," she says. </div></div>

Very good snapshot of the situation 40 Legz. They cater to both local and foreign men. Here though we have a case of women going to work in the sex trade not foreign women going to Asia for hook-ups with Japanese men. A bit different from some of the sex tourism patterns we've discussed so far. I do know that all over Southeast Asia there are Thai, Chinese, and Russian girls in the "massage" industry.

Joji Obara was a guarded man. Throughout his adult life, the Japanese millionaire studiously avoided cameras, and despite having surgery to make his eyes rounder he invariably wore sunglasses to shield them from the world.

But behind the closed doors of his condominium at Zushi, a seaside town one hour south of Tokyo, the playboy property speculator kept fastidious records of his achievements, police allege. Buried among more than 5000 videotapes, hundreds of cassettes, bottles of drugs and vast piles of junk amassed over 30 years, they found a diary full of names and a brief but ominous entry.

It had been scrawled down the page in a light hand alongside the name of a young Australian woman, Carita Ridgway, and read: "Too much chloroform."

Carita, a 21-year-old acting student who had grown up in Perth and settled in the Sydney beach suburb Clovelly, arrived at Tokyo’s Narita airport in December, 1991. She had been drawn to Japan by the prospect of lucrative holiday work even as the country’s bubble economy was rapidly deflating around her.

Tokyo police were not remotely interested when the former model, who had recently started working as a bar hostess, went missing and died in mysterious circumstances two months later. Nine years would pass before they investigated the matter seriously. By then Carita’s death had become a vital element in the most sensational criminal case in Japan's recent history; a case that has widely been seen, inside Japan and out, as an allegory for the country's rise and fall, its boom years and subsequent economic and moral malaise.

On Tuesday a judge in Tokyo's District Court will hand down a verdict in the tortuous six-year legal proceedings against Obara, who is now 55. He is accused of raping and killing Carita and another foreign woman, Lucie Blackman, a British hostess who vanished in 2000 and was found dismembered in a shallow grave less than 100 metres from Obara's white stucco apartment building, the "Blue Sea".

It was only after Blackman disappeared, and her father lobbied the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, to mention the matter on a visit to Japan, that the case exploded.

Spuriously descended from geisha tradition, hostess clubs offer a welcome break for the salaryman with time to spare and money to burn. For a price, harassed men can enjoy the company of glamorous young women who are seemingly infatuated with them. The girls pour their drinks, light their cigarettes, flirt outrageously, and laugh uproariously at drunken jokes and tedious anecdotes.

The expression “hostess bar” covers a wide variety of establishments. “Kurabu” are usually exclusive clubs for which a non-member would need an introduction from a member to enter. The less prestigious “kyabakura” are open to everyone, and are generally less expensive than kurabu.

Empty your wallets

The hostess bar experience can be incredibly expensive. This is not only due to the entrance fee, which can be steep, but will be nothing compared to the price of drinks. These range from the mildly pricy (1,000 yen for a glass of beer) to the astronomical (100,000 yen for a bottle of Dom Perignon Champagne). Flashier customers might easily spend 500,000 yen in a night. Because of the cost, many Japanese men only go to hostess bars to entertain clients and for other work events – i.e. when the company foots the bill. However, Japanese companies are much less likely to fund these outings than during the heady excesses of the 1980s.

Sex?

Hostess bars encourage their girls to be as flirtatious as possible, but most discourage “makura eigyou” (pillow business, or sexual relations with customers). In fact, it’s the unavailability of the hostesses which makes the most successful clubs so popular with clients. Email addresses or phone numbers might be exchanged, occasionally with the Mama-san as an intermediary, but this is generally to maintain occasional contact with the customer and keep them coming back to the club.

Dohan – arranged dates with customers – are a distasteful but necessary part of the job for many hostesses. A regular customer will negotiate with the bar to take their favourite girl to dinner, perhaps chauffeuring her back to the bar to start work. Clubs like their staff to do a lot of these dohan, because they bring customers back to the club and encourage them to spend more money when they get there.

Hostesses have a variety of tactics to discourage would-be gropers, while avoiding offending the customer or disturbing the mood. For some hostesses, a scolding fingerwag (“you naughty boy”) is enough to deter unwanted fondling. Others like to hold the client’s hand tightly, seemingly affectionate act that prevents “busy hands” creeping anywhere unexpected.

Now to a different locale. In Toronto, we now have rickshaws in tourist areas advertising "Hot oil, massage, 30 women 10 private VIP rooms". It's definitely "full service massage" as they call it in Asia that they are advertising. The rickshaw operator gets paid a lot to carry that advertising so they are definitely making a kiling at this "hot oil massage". Not sure who the patrons are.

The point is, that all sexual tourism isn't just white men taking advantage of poor disadvantaged third world women. There is all kind of people wrapped up in the sex trades. All kinds of Johns and all kinds of Jills. All kinds of skin colors are involved, and both sexes too... and all the shades between.

I said most not all...as far as I recall, no one said all. I had posted in this very thread about:

- the busses in Thailand that take Japanese businessmen around for encounters
- the article I posted about the situation in Malaysia was about tourists AND locals
- the Russian women brought to Dubai to take care of the "needs" of Middle Eastern men - someone else posted about the situation in the middle east but I don't recall who it was or what they said.

Like it or not, it's mostly White folks involved in sex tourism. Most does not = all. It's to do with who has the money and the time to travel for sex tourism. Trust me, as more people of other races have the time and the money, they'll do it too. Such is human nature.

Anotehr British lady died at the hands of a oh so civilised Japanese person a few months back... buired in a bath of sand on the balcony of a flat..

A few months back a lady in Thialand was convicted of murdering her English husband with the help of her lover... Guess that is cool...

I know alot of ex military guys married to Thai women..... Beleive it or not the women invariably control the finance... The driver being that forginers cant own land out right in Thialand.. So it is easier for them to have the house in the name of the bride... There is an aporiphal story...A aquatance of mine was about to marry a daughter of a Thai Coronel... he took him to a national park and demonstrated what would happen should he make the coronel daughter lose face....

But it is all simplistic....

Simplistic maybe, but makes a change from the exploitation of labor, resources, and people for sex that Europeans and Americans have been doing in Asia for centuries. Besides, are these Thais going to Europe or the Americas looking for spouses? If they are, then that really puts a different spin on things, but somehow I think not.
