Hmmm.

Last year I had a 4y.o kid on my caseload that behave wussa dan dis likkle girl.

She would abuse her classmates, spit pon de teachers, damage the tings inna de room, and bite anybody weh try touch har. Sometimes she would get so wild an outta hand that not one, not 2, but 3 ppl would have to subdue..and call her guardian. If the guardian couldn't reach then I would have to go and remove har from the school grounds. She coodan cuss some badwud mek yuh wonder weh she get dem from. When yuh siddung an talk to har an ask har why she do wah she do...she could not tell you. When yuh ask har how was her day an what she do at school. She seh the day was good and she describe everytin weh happen EXCEPT har 'tantrum'.

This used to occur @ least once a week until we tek har from dat school an sen har to a specialize campus weh deal wid dem tings deh and put har in more intensive therapy. *sigh*

btw..she was a 'crack baby'

As far as mi concern...this likkle pickney 'janesha' or whatever seem like she have problem from long time and dem shoodan address dat before it even cum to dis.

Police dem coodan hangle dis betta as well. They are supposed to be trained in dem tings deh...@ least inna Broward County they are.

Her biological mom was a crack addict and the lil girl was born addicted.

i have now seen the video. i have no doubt that poor child has some kinda affliction.

in my experience, there are ways of dealing with a child acting out so. the problem is -- it involves hands on. hands on these days is an invite to a lawsuit. in the day, i would sit on the floor crossed legged and simply hold the child in my lap with their arms crossed as well.

this is a very angry child. a tormented child.

i still do not believe in the handcuffing. but, i completely fail to see racism in this situation. i have no doubts that a white child, asian child, native american child would have been treated the same way.

to those teachers, administrators, case managers out there, you have my great respect.

the societal problems these days are very overwhelming. added with the lack of good parenting ... well, let me just say this .... we are all screwed.

makes me kinda glad i am not in my 20's.

The girl had a history of problems at the school, though the full extent is not known because student records are not public.

District officials have discussed an incident several weeks before the handcuffing in which a city police officer was called to the school because of a behavior problem with the girl. The officer said something to her about the possibility of being handcuffed if her behavior continued.

Akins later objected to that conversation, part of an ongoing feud with the school over her daughter's treatment.

The mother of the 5-year-old girl who was handcuffed at school by police has withdrawn her daughter from Pinellas public schools and is moving out of state.

So others are weighing the possibility that it might be racially motivated as well; aldoa I do believe that it is.! There are subtle, covert forms of racism which might not be obvious at the outset of some incidents..it was di same way di Mayor of the Wormy Happle along with his cohorts nevvah think either Abner Louima or Ahmoudi Diallo were the victims of racist cops...same way..nothing new in America..

.....the cuffs carried by any policeman r too big for any child and the child, theoretically could have simply pulled her hands out.

This should support the theory of the police using the handcuff tactic simply to frighten her into behaving.

Let us not forget the child's mother was being evicted from her home 2 weeks after the incident. To evict smaddy outa dem apt takes a longer time than 2 weeks. The feeling because of the media frenzy is a convenient excuse.

She is effectively using the cameras to her utmost advantage. Both her and the father ought to be arrested and charged with child abuse and neglect and who knows what else.

Yesterday, I was about to write this very statement. Sad, but, true statement.

After reading thru all the posts, those that feel that racism played a part (Me) and those that don't feel like racism played a part, most likely are looking at it through their own life experiences.

Dahjah said something to the effect: What if it was your child? Bingo! Entirely different picture that some black parents would see (myself included) if you have experienced someone treating your child different because they are a unruly little black child, instead of a unruly child. There should not be a difference, However, in too many circumstances there is a difference in the treatment or handling of the unruly black child vs. unruly child.

My youngest son had a experience in Kindergarten at the age of five. I went to the school to sort out the problem. The response that I receive from the teacher, literally took my breath away, when she gave me her answer with such a straight face, and you could tell that she really believed that stupid stuff she was spouting off to me.

Honestly, I had to get in my car, drive home and calm myself down. I went back up to the school a hour later, walked into the principals office alerted him to what was going on, he backed the teacher. However, I did get the suspension lifted. You see they were in agreement that this racism was a figment of my imagination. This happen in the early 80's. I am positive that if I describe the scenario some people, they would say it did not have anything to do with racism. Everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinions and judgements.

I said all of this to say, that some people have attitudes, perceptions, and yes stereotypes planted so deep in them, thats all they know, that can't grasp the effect that it will have on the next person.


Maybe, I am looking at it thru black and white glasses. In yesterday, today and hopefully not tomorrow, those are the only glasses that I have been afforded the experience to see through.

Really and truly, since racism is something in people's head and goes toward their intentions, it would be impossible to prove that the teachers and police officers involved in this incident were racist.

I hope that the little girl is able to go on to a productive life and that her behavior as captured on the video is not indicative of her future behavior. She can change. I am sure that some of us on this board were just as "rude" as she was. We've matured and grown up, and she can too.
