i agree with JY to a certain extent. it seems that black women's options for their hair rarely includes leaving it natural. this is apparent watching shows like American Idol. and also watching black women on popular television and in movies.

i do think at some level - GENERALLY SPEAKING - black women are uncomfortable wearing natural hair in North American society. I see far more natural hairstyles among women in Jamaica than i see this side.

i was not aware that this was some kind of bad word...i thought it was just the opposite of 'straight'...

the probem lies in that you believe if a person wears their hair any other way other than what you deem is acceptable then their must be something wrong with their sense of identity.

this all started with me questioning why black dolls should have straight hair...
and it ends there too...i still oppose the idea that straight hair is superior to 'kinky'...oh pardon me--- 'non-straight' hair;

fire pon thses dollies that subliminally tell my daughters their hair texture is not beautiful

in 20 years my stance has not changed on this...

why is it black women afraid to wear their natural hair?
who taught them that straight hair was better?

it's not a matter of what I deem acceptable- it's a matter of what 'society' deemed for them...
society told them that your natural coily hair is not beautiful so they hide it at every turn...
how a woman wears her hair is her business...
but something strange to me that the majority of black women have straight hair...when the majority of white women don't have afros--

that's my observation...but who am i?
just one dude in billions...my opinion doesn't carry all that much weight- thank god i'm allowed to express it

no i don't mean uncombed...i mean not chemically altered or burned out with a hot comb...

to be fair, i realize that nearly all women of all races need to do things with their hair...
i just think as a people we sell ourselves short when we adopt another peoples standard of beauty...

especially when we were taught that straight hair is 'good hair' and africoid hair is 'bad hair'...

i don't accept those definitions and i consider africoid hair to be 'good hair'
