...the terms 'country girls' "small island" , and 'dem place deh' , among others, need to be filed away...forever.

Maybe the terms and their connotations are are so embedded in our psyche that we fail to realize how demeaningly we act towards our own and even more so, to other nationalities especially in and of the region.

We need fi stap ie...

When I transferred from XXXXcountry school to XXXXkingston School my nickname instantly and forever became &quot;country girl&quot; even though I had classmates from my home town who never got the label.

did I find it demeaning??? heavens no, a country mi come from not town.

I don't know if I can ever give up the term small Island as I just can't seem to keep straight the other islands the WI's I am around come from. Bahamas/Barbadoes/Guyana/Grenada/St whatever...all small Island to me...and yes I got a C in geography

If you can keep your feelings to yourself...that's okay...but when you spread the venom 'subconsciously', then don't you think it adds to the lack of unity?
Oonu bigga dan dat man... refer to country girls as <span style="font-style: italic">Mary from Falmouth </span> or John from Browns Town...and get fi know di various cultures dem...

It's that time; many of you follow other changes so why does this one seem so stuck and impossible to change...?

It's a useful thing <span style="font-style: italic"> to show 'em better than yu can tell 'em</span> ..especially since nothing beats being classy ...

I don't understand your parables so mi naa even try unravel that.

As far as I'm aware, Jamaicans have not had an attitude of animosity towards residents of other islands.
Generally, we only feel kinship towards them so discovering that many of them don't like us comes as a surprise to most Jamaicans.
Their attitude is for them to explain!

You are bent on holding on to your view otherwise you have understood everything I have said in this post... parables and all...

I am not here to convince you...just to re-awaken fairness in your reasoning...and to suggest a re-assessment of your attitude towards <span style="font-weight: bold">non-Jamaicans</span> who may
not be of any use to you...inside and outside of Jamaica.
Jamaicans do not need much of an excuse to look down on anybody at anytime...'small islanders' and 'people from di country' included...you know the truth...ciao!

I think the reason your parables are confusing is that you're talking things that don't apply to me.

I'm not exactly from Kingston.
I grew up in rural St. Andrew, hence my handle.
So I certainly don't look down on 'country people'.

As for people from elsewhere in the Caribbean, I think brotherhood is the default position of Jamaicans.
Consider that Jamaica has a relatively large campus of the UWI with students from the Eastern Caribbean.
How many Caribbean nationals do you hear complaining of harassment in Jamaica BECAUSE they're not Jamaican?

That's why I don't accept the thesis that the problem is Jamaicans if that's what you're getting at.
But for some Jamaicans, the problem is always Jamaican....except for themselves, of course.
