Because at the end of the day, is one country tell yuh seh even yuh grandpickney can come there and live as citizens regardless of where in the world they were born.

My personal take is that regional cooperation not integration is what the whole Caribbean prefers.
You don't have to take your neighbour into your home to have a good relationship with them.

No; I disagree with that opinion.

Always felt this way from they had the term 'small island' many, many years ago...from as way back as the <span style="font-style: italic">Federal Palm</span> and the <span style="font-style: italic">Federal Maple</span>...the Caribbean cruise lines.

Not to mention when I went to college and met these wonderfully smart, classy folks, <span style="font-style: italic">friends of my husband, </span>...up the road ...in an Ivy setting... from a variety of islands
still being called 'small islanders'...and sneered at.

Let's not even touch the essence of the <span style="font-style: italic">country</span> term...the derision speaks for itself. So many useful contributions have been made by people from 'di country'...yet they are still regarded as buffoons by many.

Putting both terms together, however,...<span style="font-style: italic">small island</span> and <span style="font-style: italic">country</span>...whether I lived in The Bahamas or not...I would still find such words offensive for these folks who are among some of the kindest and most gracious people in the world....as I would for any group of persons who feel put upon by another group that not only feels superior but displays that superiority blatantly.

It's just not right.


Who still talks about the<span style="font-style: italic"> negro</span> or flaunts a 'picky' head?

So... let's get serious...everyone on here is pretty much educated and sensible...

Nothing is wrong in being from the country.
What I am finding intolerable is the fact that someone like you, for example, who has seen much that the world has to offer would still be regarded as &quot;country' ...boorish and from the backwoods...by some ... after all you have accomplished.

They cheer for Bolt but they still remember that he is 'fram di country' as if it were a bad thing...rather than one of acknowledged distinction.

One thing we are good at is English ...surely we can find words to express alternatives for 'small islands' and 'fram di country'.

Let me just say I too refer to Bolt as beign from the country.. Because too few athletes come from Trelwany...

Merelene Ottey was never seen as a country girl even though she was from Hannover, and admitted culture shock on going to Vere... She was never called country

Country people from all over the world are veiwed by urbanites as boorish, ignorant.. Just as country people veiw those from the urban centerss as insular, ill- mannered and imoral. In fact I beleive that the same tension exists in all college towns...Ask any one who went to a prestigious college of the tension between college and town... There were riots going back centuaries in Oxford and Cambridge for instance.. The need to diefentiate and to be part of an identifiable group is as seacond nature as breathing...

doc will no doubt tell you when he comes in that until the 80's when there was an advert in the papers in Jamaica for help and the term they wanted a country person.. This was short hand for saying they wanted a reds from Southern St Elizabeth.


Even to the extent that the term Heretic actually means being from the country-...
