RIP Hon Dudley Thompson



FORMER Jamaican Cabinet Minister Dudley Thompson died this morning in New York, USA, one day after he celebrated his 95th birthday. Thompson served as minister of national security and justice, as well as foreign affairs minister.

Known as one of Jamaica's finest lawyers of his generation, Thompson was a firebrand minister of national security and Member of Parliament under the Michael Manley-led People's National Party regime of the 1970s.


Thompson, a Mico College Rhodes Scholar, also served as Minister of Foreign Affairs during the period, and later ambassador and high commissioner to several African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, and Namibia.

He had lived in Florida for several years and was in New York to attend a meeting when he died.

His infamous statement that 'no angels died at Green Bay' following the killing of five civilian supporters of the Jamaica labour Party by local army personnel at a firing range in the hills of St Catherine in 1977 caused much controversy.

The Green Bay massacre occurred 34 years ago on January 5, 1978. Five men from Gold Street and Higholborn Street in the Central Kingston community of Southside were lured into an ambush at the Jamaica Defence Force firing range and shot dead.

They had gone there based upon a promise of getting jobs. Among the five killed was outstanding former Santos Football Club and Jamaica midfielder Norman 'Gutto' Thompson.

i have always had a healthy respect for his intellect...from his days on the Continent of Africa, defending the Original Burning Spear, Taa ya Kenya or Swahili for the 'Light of Kenya', Jomo Kenyetta in the Mau Mau trials...i have enjoyed his intellect firsthand as he would come on campus at SAHS to lecture n found him to be a brilliant speaker....my heart goes out to his two daughters., fellow alums of SAHS, one of whom has contributed to this website in the form of her acclaimed novels....The True History of Paradise and The Pirate`s daughter

Nothing he did can, not the trials he won, not the Nazi planes he shot down can assuage what happened at Green Bay and his role in it... Why ??? Because before he had no power, at Green Bay he was the power.....

I was thinking of his legacy and Green Bay is the only thing that I could think of... So when frank referred to his passing (at 95 yrs) as a loss, I just did not feel that way...

..however condolences to family.

Name A politician in his position as minister of security who is not responsible for the death of (allegedly) innocents or angels?
It is the nature of power, that with it sometimes comes the responsibility of make decisions that involves life and death.....or taking responsibility for it.

Green bay killing is regretable but in a time of near civil war and rampant foreign interventionist policies, via CIA operations one will never really know what happen there.
Who would believe that the CIA would burn old people as a means to discredit Manley's government - EvenTide Home fire. Who is to say that this is not more of the same - CIA paying elements within the JDF to lure and kill members of a community known to oppose the government.
There have been killings before and after green bay by government forces.

I will not offer apologies for his life and actions.....do you know what really happened at &quot;Green Bay&quot;?
Neither am I saying what happening is right or good, anyones death is regretable.
It is naive to expect our heroes to be perfect...when they are human.

He was and remained stedfast in his opposition to Colonialism, Neo-colonialism and US imperialism. I Find nothing Ironic in him living in the US, as a matter of fact based on what he was doing( WADU-http://www.wadupam.org/) the US was the best place for him as many others who oppose all forms of Imperialism still live and reside the West. It is the sometime best to be in close proximity to the centers of power in order to effect change.

Awarded a Government Scholarship to Mico Training College in Jamaica and taught as a Headmaster before going to the United Kingdom to<span style="color: #FF0000"> volunteer </span>for the Royal Air Force. Trained at the Officer's training College, RAF Cranwell.
<span style="font-weight: bold">1941-1945 - Flew as a member of the aircrew over Europe with Bomber Command. Awarded several war decorations as a Flight Lieutenant in active combat.

1950 - Called to the Bar in London from Gray's Inn.

Did tutelage with Sir Dingle Foote, QC (Subsequently Solicitor General of the United Kingdom) and appeared with him before the Privy Council.

1953 - Practiced as a Barrister-at law in the East - including Tanganyika and Kenya, where he was part of the international<span style="font-weight: bold"> team defending Jomo Kenyatta </span>(along with H.O.A. Davis of Nigeria; D. N. Pritt QC and others.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Also practiced in Trinidad, Barbados, St. Kitts, Dominica, The Bahamas, Grenada and elsewhere in the West Indies.</span>

1962 - Became President of the Jamaica Bar Association for many years.

1963 - Appointed a Queen's Council (SAN)

<span style="font-size: 17pt">Played an effective role in the independence movement of both Belize and Bahamas</span>

Was a Member of both the Senate of Jamaica and the Leader of Government Business in the House and later a Member of the House of Representatives.

Occupied in turn the Cabinet posts of Minister of Foreign Affaris; National Security and Minister of Mines and Natural Resources, where he renegotiated the contracts with the bauxite and alumina multinationals and played a leading role in Jamaica's part in the formation of the International Bauxite Association.

Awarded the Order of Jamaica, one of Jamaica's most prestigious decorations, for distinguished service in the field of International Affairs and his contribution to the legal developments in Jamaica.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Was Jamaica's chief representative in the conferences on the Law of the Sea. Was personally responsible for securing Jamaica as the premanent site for the International Seabed Authority in Kingston.</span>

Led Jamaica's delegation to many international conferences, including the United Nations and the Organization of American States for many years.

<span style="color: #FF0000">Responsible for introducing the Ombudsman to Jamaica</span>

Was awarded the Mico Old Students' gold Medal - the most prestigious teacher's award.

<span style="font-size: 14pt"> Regarded as an intellectual and long standing Pan-Africanist, a friend and colleague of George Padmore, Kwame Nkrumah, C.L.R. James, Julius Nyerre and M.K.O. Abiola</span>

<span style="font-size: 17pt">Awarded a medal by the OAU as a &quot;Legend Of Africa&quot;.</span>



Up to the time of appointment as Ambassador to Nigeria, Ghana and other African countries he was President of the Rhodes Scholars Society of Jamaica.

1992 - Empanelled as member of the Group of Eminent Persons, which is charged with implementing the Movement for Reparations to Africa and the Diaspora as a result of slavery and its effect. This Movement is under the auspices othe OAU. At present he is the Rapporteur of the GEP.

2008 - President WADU World Africa Diaspora Union and Umbrella Association.

This is the identical thesis postulated by all and sundry to justify evil...Assad is using it, Gaddaffi used it, Castro used it, Somoza used it, GEary used it, Coard used it, the colonilist use it, Columbus used it .. Under Jamaican law it does not justify..

To shoot unarmed civilains none of whom were wanted in connection with any crime by offering them work pales.. The men who survived were not charged with any crime.....

And yes there is justification for bombing Dresden and Hiroshima, but to invite people to a kill zone and open fire without warning ??????? What War ??????




If the minister in charge was not aware of Green Bay prior he was incompetent...... if he was he sanctioned it...

As for the CIA, I could equally argue that angels from heaven came down and set these guys up as an option.

As a casual labourer offered work on manny occasions I went to places on word of mouth and or casual invitation.....It could have been me....
