It's time we stop judging ppl based on these outward beliefs. BeLIEfs are what get us into trouble. This is why I said judge not. I am not putting anyone in one box or saying anyone is unworthy. I am merely saying that those who support artists carrying themselves in a scruffy manner and speaking to international press as if they don't know one word of English should not complain when it creates an unfavourable impression of Jamaicans in general and Jamaican men in particular. Compare how Bob Marley's daughters speak and carry themselves with how the sons speak and act. It is not surprising that people would develop a negative impression.

You can't have it both ways. You can't in one breath big up these guys who carry themselves like ragamuffins, drag themselves around like they have no energy and refuse to speak English and then in the next breath criticize someone who develops negative impressions based on the image that they themselves have created.

If you support this manner of dressing, speaking and behaving....that is your right. Ditto for these Jamaican dancehall style dancers who have created a very negative image of Jamaican women by the way they dress and carry on. However, when people form negative impressions based on it, don't complain. You should have nothing to say about it...it goes for the territory.

There are similarities to the Trayvon Martin case. That is why I have been telling my son since age 15 to watch the way he dresses. There is no point in making oneself a target or a lightening rod for negative attention.

I certainly have never bought him Black or brown hoodies. Thank his Jamaican cousins for that . He has been warned<span style="font-weight: bold"> time and time again</span> <span style="font-size: 14pt"><span style="font-weight: bold"> not </span></span> to wear dark hoodies pulled up over his head after dark. He came last week and wore a brown hoodie. It was unzipped and the hoodie was down and it was not after dark. Trust me, if I could get my hand on the Black and brown hoodies I would get rid of them.... but I can't. He is at the age when he selects his own clothes.

I finally figured if you can't beat 'em join em so when travelling last year, I purchased blue, white (with a little bit of black and green), red and gray hoodies for him. I even bought a hoodie in Jamaican colours but he still wears the black and brown :red: (putting the red on over the black when he goes out at night).

I'll tell you a quick story. The day before my son came, I was going out in the morning. A taxi pulled up in front of the house and this tall guy wearing Black track pants and a black hoodie pulled up over his head got out. You couldn't even see his face. I thought who the heck is that and the impression was not favourable. No it wasn't my son. It was the new boyfriend of the girl who lives downstairs (both White). She is the same age as my son and has a 4 years old.

Whether you like it or not, people do form impressions based on how one dresses, speaks and carries themselves. This is not going to change any time soon. Dress as you like. Wear dreadlocks down to your ankles and pants with the waste at your knees but don't complain when people judge you harshly.

Having said that I don't believe Trayvon was shot because of the hoodie. Sure it may have attracted negative attention but he was shot because George Zimmerman is a racist jerk and George should get the death penalty.

If you are saying that the fact that J-a has some ghetto people it is justified for a head of state to style the country in this general way then you are part of the problem...every country has ghettoes or areas where negative things happen---yes even Canada...
I bet you think a handsome smiling politician who heads a powerful nation is the picture of respectability---
Even if that said politician has caused the deaths if thousands upon thousands of innocent men women and children...

Last I checked, English was still the official language for Jamaica. Patois has it's place. If one is being interviewed by the international press, it is not the time or place for patois. Jamaican press is a different story.

Wi tongue...speak for yourself.Patois has always been a language for casual interaction, art, theatre, music, etc. It has never been the language of business or education in Jamaica. Talk to your parents and they will tell you that when they were in school, they would get into trouble for speaking patois...not that was carrying things too far.

My mom told me about one of her teachers who would do plays and poetry in patois but she insisted that the children speak English on the playground and in class. She realized that many of the children would eventually migrate and travel so they had better have a command of the English language.

She has a drawing on the blackboard called Moddah Long Tongue with a cartoon bubble. Children were encouraged to report their classmates who spoke patois in the yard during recess and what ever they said was put in the balloon as what Moddah Long Tongue was saying. (My mother got caught many times bus she can speak English).

I have seen the results of kids arriving in Canada and struggling at school because they can't speak English...why should our kids always get the leftovers and be struggling. Kids from Italy, Greece and other countries have a horrible time when they first move here. Why would anyone in their right minds want to put that kind of handicap on their kids? How easy did you find it when you first went to school and could only speak patois? How well did your classmates receive you? Why would you wish this on anyone else.

Do not put words in my mouth. This has NOTHING to do with being from the ghetto. As Jamaicans most of us can trace our roots to poverty. It is the legacy of slavery. I have <span style="text-decoration: underline"><span style="font-weight: bold">deliberately</span></span> posted <span style="font-weight: bold">NUMEROUS </span> video clips of Jamaican musicians from humble beginnings (some were even at the Alpha Boys School). They ALL carried themselves with dignity and spoke well. Harry Belafonte was very poor. A lot of the ska and rock steady artists came from the ghetto. Ditto for some of the music producers like King Jammy.

Sidney Potier was raised in the Bahamas and when he came back to America he spoke with a stammer and was barely ineligible. He worked HARD to speak clearly and become a successful actor.

One of the films, The Defiant Ones (1958), gave Poitier his first Academy Award nomination as Best Actor. Five years later, he won the Oscar for Lilies of the Field (1963), the first African American to win for a leading role. Poitier maintained activity on stage, on screen, and in the burgeoning Civil Rights movement.
