Oscar Pistorius bail hearing: Lead detective contradicts himself on stand
The detective leading the police investigation into Oscar Pistorius’s fatal shooting of his girlfriend offered confusing testimony Wednesday, at one point agreeing with the athlete’s defence that officers had no evidence challenging the runner’s claim he accidentally killed her.
The detective leading the police investigation into Oscar Pistorius’s fatal shooting of his girlfriend offered confusing testimony Wednesday, at one point agreeing with the athlete’s defence that officers had no evidence challenging the runner’s claim he accidentally killed her.
Testimony by Detective Warrant Officer Hilton Botha of the South African Police Service left prosecutors rubbing their temples, only able to look down at their notes as he misjudged distances and acknowledged a forensics team left in the toilet bowl one of the bullet slugs fired at Reeva Steenkamp.
However, Botha still poked holes in Pistorius’s own account that he feared for his life and opened fire on Valentine’s Day after mistaking Steenkamp for an intruder.
The second day of the bail hearing in a case that has riveted South Africa and much of the world appeared at first to go against the double-amputee runner, with prosecutors saying a witness can testify to hearing “non-stop talking, like shouting” between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. before the predawn shooting on Feb. 14.
However, Botha later said under cross examination that the person who overheard the argument was in a house 600 metres away in Pistorius’s gated community in the suburbs of South Africa’s capital, Pretoria.
Later still, prosecutor Gerrie Nel questioned Botha again and the detective acknowledged the distance was much closer.
But confusion reigned for much of his testimony, when at one point Botha said officers found syringes and steroids in Pistorius’s bedroom. Nel quickly cut the officer off and said the drugs were actually testosterone.
A spokesman for the state prosecutor later said there was an error in a detective’s testimony when he identified a substance police found in the athlete’s bedroom as testosterone.
Medupe Simasiku, a spokesman for South Africa’s National Prosecution Agency, said it is too early to identify the substance as it is still undergoing laboratory tests.
Pistorius, a double amputee dubbed “Blade Runner” because he raced on carbon fibre blades, sobbed uncontrollably as Botha presented his testimony about the death ofSteenkamp, 29.
The law graduate and model was in the toilet of the athlete’s home when she was shot dead.
The shooting and allegations that have emerged at the bail hearing have stunned South Africa and millions of people around the world who regarded Pistorius, who has no lower legs, as the epitome of sporting triumph over adversity.
“One of our witnesses heard a fight, two people talking loudly at each other . . . from two in the morning to three,” Botha told the court.
In an affidavit delivered on Tuesday, Pistorius said he woke in the middle of the night and thought an intruder had climbed through his bathroom window and entered the adjoining toilet.
The 26-year-old said he grabbed a 9-mm pistol from under his bed and went into the bathroom.
Pistorius — the highest-profile athlete in the history of the Paralympics — then described how he fired into the locked toilet door in a blind panic in the belief the intruder was lurking inside.
In his testimony on Wednesday, Botha disputed Pistorius’s affidavit.

This charge makes you wonder because he was charged initially, then the charges were dropped and suddenly they are re surfacing...Originally posted by My Looh View PostNew twist in the case.
The lead investigator has now himself been charged with attempted murder.
You can't make this stuff up!
In any case, it still doesnt explain away Blade Runner's actions!

Personally, I do think the shooting was an accident. Look at Pistorius' demeanour He would either have to be an actor or a raging psychopath to come across the way he does.
One thing is certain...he is way too jumpy and panicky and he definitely needs to get counselling.
Can't believe how long the bail hearing is.

Holy Jumpin' WAY too much drama. Reminds me of Mark Furhman.
Lead detective in Oscar Pistorius murder case dropped
No loss he was a lousy witness anyway.Detective Hilton Botha, who has given evidence against the Paralympian during his bail hearing this week, is facing seven counts of attempted murder and is due to appear in court in May.
He and two other police officers are accused of firing shots while trying to stop a minibus in an incident believed to have happened in October 2011.
At the time, Botha was chasing a man accused of murdering a woman, chopping her up and stuffing the body parts down a drain, local media said.
The charges against Botha were provisionally withdrawn but were reinstated on February 4 - 10 days before the shooting of 29-year-old model and law graduate Reeva Steenkamp in a locked toilet at Pistorius' Pretoria home, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said.
"The decision to reinstate was taken on February 4, way before the issue of Pistorius came to light or the murder of Reeva was committed," NPA spokesman Medupe Simasiku said. "It's completely unrelated to this trial."
The news of his removal from the investigation came as Pistorius was due to find out today if he will be granted bail after being charged with the premeditated murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
"Blade Runner" Pistorius has returned to court for the third day of his high-profile bail hearing.
He has admitted shooting 29-year-old model Steenkamp, but claims he did so thinking she was a burglar or burglars, who were in the bathroom. He said he opened fire in the dark because he was too scared to turn a light on.
Realising his mistake, he broke the door down with a cricket bat and carried her downstairs, he said.
Yesterday Botha acknowledged the prosecution had no evidence challenging the double-amputee Paralympian's claim that he killed his girlfriend accidentally, as well as admitting a number of police blunders in the investigation.

i find it interesting that they didn't mention that she's a law graduate in the first reports, but just a "leggy blonde". poor blondes. what the hell does "leggy" mean anyhow? stupid world.
«In an interview with the Mail before London 2012 it was revealed Pistorius slept with a pistol next to his bed, a machine gun by a window with a cricket bat and baseball bat behind the door.
Pistorius also posted a photograph of himself at a shooting range in November 2011 to the social media website Twitter, bragging about his score tweeting: 'had a 96% headshot over 300m from 50shots! Bam!' he tweeted.
Another tweet shows his concern about someone breaking into his home, on November 27 last year he wrote: 'Nothing like getting home to hear the washing machine on and thinking its an intruder to go into full combat recon mode into the pantry! »
