Of course it is not only here I found out that other Jamaica flag wavers and harassers either left Jamaica as a baby or lived pretty isolated cultural upbringing that made them foreign to day to day running in Jamaica.

I don't associate with that type of individual at home or abroad. For the record I have been all over Jamaica country, town, remote communities in the hills, and to some of the rougher parts of Kingston as I had to for my work.

I've never seen anything even remotely like that. Not even close. Frankly, until I saw the video I never even knew that such type of behaviour was possible. Mi noh know what kind of hovel dem did crawl out a but certainly no where that I know or have a desire to know.

Tropicana, attending a finaral a yaad dese days is a whole lot diffrant from fuss time..even me was taken aback wen mi had to attend one unexpectedly a year ago....di smaddy who died was an ole stalwart in his community...bury eena church yaad n ting but di variety a people who di finaral attracted ran di gamut of social group n dem demeanour, behaviour, dung to dem way of dressing was eye opening...mi notice say a crowd gathered outside di church, scattered all ovah di grounds but not really paying any attention to wat a gwane eena di church...di outfits were very night-clubbish...wen mi ask y dem deh deh if dem not mourners I was told dat dem know of di man n since food was going to be served after the internment dem was dere fi di food....an so said , so done...wen mi come outta di church, tent had been put up on the lawn of the church , table n chair put out n food served...dis was in Mandeville...

Clearly this goes on or we wouldn't have the video but it's nothing that I've come across.

My grandmother's funeral was held in the country and a lot of people turned up but I saw nothing like that. We didn't serve the food at the church. After she was buried, we all went back to the house (her house). It was all relatives and family friends.

My family is very close to the family that owns the local funeral parlour. So close that when some of the children have come to Canada to go to university, they lived with my parents. I forwarded the video to a couple of members of that family. It's a large family some live in Canada, 1 is in the US, 1 is in the UK, and one is in Jamaica running the funeral parlour as the father is getting old. They go back to Jamaica regularly. They've never come across anything like that either.

One more thing, the last time I went to Jamaica was less than 2 years ago and I didn't see that type of slutty dressing, nt even at the hairdresser. The last time I was up in the hills was less than 3 years ago.

i was at a funeral last year for a guy I know from my youth lets say a player ... I went quietly, and lets say it was a fashion show and alot of food and watas did run....a lata people jus grap an tek....it was an occassion...a lot of money run....

u should see when dem come fi the set up the night before.. In some places people even come wid dem hand cart fi sell drinks and tings fi 'supplement' the set up food.

I ran the video by a number of relatives who bawn a go a country and inna de 'ills. Not one of them has ever seen or heard of anything like this either in terms of dress or behaviour. One of them returned to Jamaica for her mother's funeral last year WAY up inna de ils where to get to mi great granny yawd you ave fi drive pon bad road, park de cyar and walk cause de road is dung to de bedrock. She hadn't come across this either.

I sent the video and asked if they had ever seen or heard of anything like this in terms of behaviour and style of dress.

Also, this is a direct quote from the daughter of the funeral parlour owner and director in our town back a yawd. Her sister now runs the funeral parlour. The father though old is still involved somewhat.

I spoke with her on the phone and confirmed that her comment sent to me via e-mail was indeed referring to both dress and behaviour.

Funerals have, over the last few years, become quite a spectacle and funeral parlours seem to be in strong competition against each other to see who can stage the 'bashiest' funeral.
The coffin and mode of transport to the cemetery are a couple of the tools where great creativity is employed to bring off a sending-off to remember. The issue of death has now become more of a celebration and show-off and, sometimes, one wonders if much mourning is taking place.
Is the death of a loved one an opportunity to showcase wealth and affluence?
Mode of dressing
There have been a few features of the modern-day funeral, which may be reason for some concern.
One such feature is the the great likeness of some funerals to dances. The mode of dressing seen at many funerals is hardly appropriate for the settings of a church. There are also those that choose to smoke and drink within the church compound, which shows a lack of respect for the clergy.
These issues must be addressed by the Church and strong and firm rules must be instituted by the clergy to bring back a sense of sanity to the ritual.
Exposure of bodies
A more grave concern on my part, however, is the transportation of bodies along the main thoroughfare in glass chariots, leaving the caskets exposed. This means that one has no choice but to view the body of the dead, whether they want to.
It is, therefore, an infringement of our rights to force such an inappropriate sight on us.
In my opinion, it is no different from two persons having sexual intercourse in the public, which we don't want to see. If we want to see a body, we will find the funeral and go have a look at the dead. Don't make the choice for us.
Having said that, I must implore the Government to - just as they have legislated laws against improper sexual behaviour - implement laws against the indecent exposure of bodies along our streets via see-through coffins and chariots.
Keep a few of us from the nightmares and upset stomach that attend these sights for, although we all know that death is inevitable, there are those of us who would rather not face it indiscriminately.

IF THERE ever was a doubt left in anyone's mind as to what you should wear to a funeral, every shadow was removed last week by the mourning massive as they dressed to kill, wore clothes to die for and looked more dapper than an Oscar night bash hosted by The Addams Family.
Anyone who doesn't understand Jamaican culture would be intrigued by how we deal with the transition into the next world. Even in everyday life we hate to say "Goodbye", "The End!", "No More!", "I'm Gone!". Instead we say "Soon Come!", "Likkle More!", "Later" and "More Time!" So when it comes to the passing of a loved one, we treat it more as a celebration than a mourning.
Well, the celebration for tribal chief Willie Haggart was the bashment to end all bashes. Who isn't in awe of the parade that filed past Willie's casket? I bet Willie would have loved to see it! He'd have loved the brouhaha the media has blown about who he was and what he stood for, and he'd have relished the send-off he got by those who loved him.
We'd all love to be at our own funeral to see who turns up that you never really liked, to be able to shed a tear with those you held most dear and make a few comments if you could.
It would have been fun if Willie could have shared his thoughts with us. Better yet, wouldn't it have been cool if a laser had written what he was thinking in blue letters in the incense smoke above his coffin.
Imagine as Beenie Man performed in the church Willie's words appearing: "De suit nuh real gold yuh know. Singapore it mek and dem sew in designer label. Quarter million dollar? A fifty dollar dung a thrift store!"
As Dancehall Queen Stacey wisped by in a negligee he might have said: "Who dat? Stacey a you? True me never recognise you with yuh clothes on. Good ting you wear baggy under yuh nightie or dem would a say dis a de fuss nude funeral."
As for politicians and their cronies cramming oversized and overrated asses into pews Willie might have said: "Yuh dog yuh! A de fuss you come a funeral and you not the most expensive dress in de place."
Willie would have had lots of fun. Not least when his service was stopped so an extremely late Skeng Don could view the body. The congregation would have roared if Willie's thoughts had said: "What time yuh call dis? Me a de ongle one supposed to late today. Awhoa! Anyway now yuh 'ere, tek a good look. A you nex!"
It is also ironic that the politicians who turned up showed up all their kind for what they are. In one fell swoop, every government Jamaica has ever had was seen as redundant and delinquent in the duties the general public elected them to perform: to alleviate poverty and eradicate crime. Instead they breed crime and eradicate poor people.
By the way, would someone answer this question. What kind of nine do you take to a nine-night when it is for someone like this dearly departed? Is it a 9mm Berretta? Is a Glock even better? Or would a Smith & Wesson do best?
Speaking of guns, something else puzzles me. Why are we buying guns from the English? All they do is give us a hard time, not surprising considering our record on human rights. Along with Amnesty International's "Good Prison Guide", "What To Do With Pork & The American Flag" by Saddam Hussein, the "How To Be Nice To A Suspect" handbook for Jamaican Police is one of the shortest books never written.
Surely if you want the best champagne, you purchase it from the French. If you want the finest caviar, you make sure it's Russian Beluga. If you want the purest bull manure, you talk to anyone in Gordon House.
So why are we buying guns from a nation where the police use a big stick and a whistle to deal with criminals? Never mind that we are intent on divorcing ourselves from their law courts and judiciary. Make any sense to you?
