1. I am not a victim
2. I am PROUD and happy to be of African descent
3. I know that if I don't study my history, I could be doomed to repeat it.
4. I know that African history begins with "Adam and Eve" and that Black Egyptians were the teachers of all of the "great" Greek and Roman scholars
5. I love my kinky/curly hair and everything else about me that reveals my African ancestry
6. I know that slavery is but a SMALL part of the entire history of Africans
7. I know that slavery has affected everything we know and do in the western hemisphere
8. I know that because of slavery, many people, to this day are discriminated against
9. I know that because of slavery, many Black people are ashamed of their heritage because they don't know the real story of their heritage.

In order to determine what life would be like WITHOUT slavery, we have to look at all the things that have happened BECAUSE OF slavery and then figure out if those things would happen under the different circumstance...that would take a LONG time...but it's still interesting to think about.

For what? All of us already know what happened. The important part is the racism and how we are vulnerable how whites think about us. It always turns into a 'what white people did to us", "how white people treated us" What Europeans did to Africa talk which isn't productive. Right now Europe is rich and moving forward and self-sufficient. You want to learn about african history go ahead. I though am not an african. I see how rich african traditions are that we still have but I am not going to embrace Nigeria or Ghana or Ethiopia when my ancestors helped build this country and have made 'the west' what is it. I am of african descent though so in my heart think Africa needs to develop and grow and I relate to the beauty of africa. I believe people that talk as you really want to embrace slavery and Africa as this mythic place. Most of us descend from West Africans. How about discussing the rich cultural heritage of Jamaicans that relates to several west african countries?- music, food and so on.

My dear, we helped build this country. You can't deny that we are westernized. No matter how white people behave we have a mix of african, european and other cultures(then again so do most people in the west).

I am very interested in different african cultures and living in DC I see beautiful east africans and west africans quite often.

I believe Africa is responsible and black people are responsible in that as a group we are divided and not doing the right thing. Europeans look down on Africans but right now are not only strong as a group but making sure they stay strong and self-sufficient(hence the forming of the European Union and so on). We can sit around and discuss white oppression and slavery and native americans but the point is that Whites are able to take care of themselves and the societies they dominate are often times succesful and wealthy ones.

I don't think Africa needs to Europeanize but what the various nations need to do, just like Europe, the US, Asia and everywhere else is look around and see what's WORKING compared to what is NOT! a zillion and one languages in one nation is not wealth or diversity it's been proven to foster division. It's also been proven that a society cannot properly function w/out a middle class. These ideas may be said to come from the west however they are learned methods and all countries that are advancing right now are letting go of some traditions and embracing what will benefit them. Just like embracing voodoo(some said b/c this is 'african'), to me this is evil and just b/c some africans do it doesn't mean we should embrace it.

I am not an african, my culture is a mix of african, european and so on. I am interested in the diversity and history and food and music of the different countries but I refuse to constantly think of myself as 'misplaced' or 'a former slave'! Blacks are as American as apple pie and there are no arawaks in Jamaica only a huge black population of african descent. Stop being so focused on the past and what whites did to us. How about focus on how they were able to do this and what we can do so it doesn't happen again. that's how the jews do it and that's how we should do it.

Girl, everyone has a rough history, even many whites were probably slaves in those days and had it rough. The natives were killed off on whole continents and so on.

I think afro-american, afro-caribbean and afro-latino and even white american and so on culture is so rich becauase of the mix of african, european, native and other cultures here in the western hemisphere. Why is our whole being in regards to how whites and Europeans see us and have treated us? I am happy with who I am. I love Jamaican culture and American culture as it is with it's diversity, mainly African influences.

I maintain that it's not about slavery but about racial harassment and discrimination. You will never get whites to feel sorry for the past particularly because many see themselves as superior period.

If all you define yourself and your history as is as a descendent of a slave then you will always feel inferior, no matter how much you claim you don't, to whites.

Why not focus on the future? Why do Jamaicans laud the contributions of Arawaks(who are mostly dead), Asians and different European groups but never their african selves? I agree we need to dispel all the lies taught in the west about Africa (because it's a really huge continent with diverse people most of whom are beautiful and have a rich culture) however it's counter-productive at the same time to think of our history only in terms of slavery and Africa. We are descendents of Africans but that is not our whole history. When I think black history I think of the music, cultures, food, our unique hair texture and bodies and then maybe the struggle against white racism by many elders and so on. But I don't first thing slavery and oppression and white people and they've treated us and how they feel about us and how they so and so, it's counterproductive.

Why don't we have our own little bollywood that our kids can watch and learn about africa through games and cartoons like Dora the explorer explores latin america? Where are the major owned black radio stations and black media so we can count on getting a less biased report from our black media. Those are the real questions because I was never a slave and while I'm primarily of African descent in the west I refuse to think of my whole being as a former slave or descendent of slaves and being 'misplaced' here when blacks helped build the US, have made Jamaica what it is and so on.

Jews use the holocaust and the legacy of anti-semitism as a catalyst to be united and progress, I've never met ONE in all my years that acted like a victim of any one group. White people still don't give a hoot, especially Europeans, they will never genuinely feel any remorse because so many still hold those same superiority views. Why do they feel superior?
