Running in the rain? Not today thanks!

So I woke up early and it was raining. I had a headache so took a tablet and went back to bed. An hour later I woke up and it was still raining so I got breakfast ready thinking, if it's not falling too hard I'd still go out for an hour [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70402-thinking.gif[/img] . Just took another peak and it is now heavy rain. I'm still debating whether to go but in the early evening instead. I'll watch and see.

Who Tri's Harder -- (triathlon report)

Pre-race routine
Was up and out of bed at 3:30am. Had a full breakfast of oatmeal and two hard boiled eggs. By 5:15 we were out the door and on our way to Wright City. The journey went quickly and we chat a little and I managed to catch a nap on the way. By 6:30 we were 5 miles from Innsbrook Resort.

Lots of people were already there milling around, getting their gear out and music was jammin from a big trailer where the race announcer was telling people where to go for their packet pickup and body markup. I got in line for my race packet while hubby got my bicycle off the car rack. I was number 423! By then the exhiliration and nervous was building up in my bladder so I made it to the portable john. The first one I stepped into I had to quickly bolt out of there [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/sick.gif[/img] With that done, I walked back to the car, got my bag with gear and bicycle and walked to the transition area to get my body marking and timing chip. In no time I found my age group bicycle rack area and quickly layed out my stuff and racked the bike. Frosty (my husband) found his way over and advised me to check the bike if it's in the correct gear...it wasn't. I decided to use this time to take it out for a spin.

The race officially to start at 8:30am, so I told hubby to meet me down by the lake. I had to make another trip to the john. When that was done, I headed back to my transition area and got my swim goggles, cap and nose clip. I wasn't certain what to happen, so I got into a line...turned out it was a line for people waiting to get into the johns!

Race to begin...
Swim
I decided it was time to head down to the lake shore with the other competitors. The announcer let us know which buoy the octomax (it was 2 triathlon event held at same time) competitors to make their first turn. I couldn't miss it as it was a big orange buoy. The race started off with octomax women racers, which was my group. We all lined up along the water line of the lake and I stayed towards the back. I cannot remember if a gun went off, but we were off running into the water then diving off for the swim!

I started swimiming freestyle and swam that way for about 50 yds then I transitioned to backstroke. I could see other swimmers along my side and I was ahead of a few. My stroke was going real good as I tried kept sight of the first buoy. For a while I found myself on the inside of the first buoy and had to correct. When I saw the big buoy I know that's where I should make my first turn. By then the sun was straight ahead, and the buoy was to my left and I decided to use that as my marker. My stroke was strong and I felt good...got some water in my mouth and I realised that I did not see any of the other swimmers. I sighed to my left and then I heard someone yelling...it was one of the water guards on a waver runner. He was yelling that I was off course!!! Here I was swimming with much gusto, felt good, my stroke was powerful, my breathing was relaxed...the sun felt good on my face and I was about a 100 yds off course. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/704555_dwl.gif[/img] He instructed me to grab onto his wave runner and asked if I was okay....having no difficulty. I told him yes and I wanted to get back into the swim race. He told me to wait for the next set of swimmers to go by then I can get back into the course. I felt a bit dumb getting so off course but it is hard sighting when you're doing a backstroke. By then I got back into the swim and this time I wasn't swimming with the women but the men doing the octomax had caught up on me. I had about 200 yds to shore and made a good swim.

I quickly ran/walked to T1 with a big grin on my face as volunteers hooted, hollered and cheered me on! I felt good despite the fact that I messed up on the swim but I got out okay. On the way to T1, an ambulance rushed past with its light flashing...I knew it must be something serious.

T1...Bike
Got to T1 and geared up smoothly without getting into a major rush. Quicly walked my bike to the start off point and I was off as people clapped and hollered. The bike was a killer! The first 5 miles was nothing but some serious hill climb and I'm not talking about rolling hills. For about every 500ft it was a 1200ft-2000ft of climbing, for 50ft at a time. My legs were killing me. Remember I am on a mountain bike and every one else was riding skinny wheel super-speedy bikes. There were 3 hills that I could not climb, even after shifting down. I was dying up there. Surprisingly, the first 5 miles, despite the strenuous climbing went quickly.

A sisterhood bicycle riders
Throughout the bike, other riders were passing me and cheeering me on. It was only female riders I kept seeing and most were those doing the quartermax (longer race). Every one yelling Go red! (I had on a red top) or Go number 423! It felt good that people were cheering me on...other competitors, pushing me to not give up while I was climbing the hill. The camaraderie of the race was just good. By the time we got out of the resort and on the street, it was gentle rolling hills. The bike ride started feeling good. The weather was great! It was cloudy day that was cooling on the skin. I was having a good time. There was one woman that I was racing against...she passed me...or me passing her. By the time I got to 15 miles about dozen hound dogs came rushing out of a farm yard towards me...I put some pedalling in and laughed my way around the turn that said 15 miles. Wow! I had only 3 miles to go.

The last three miles I was in my zone. I had some challenging hills and climbed those with no problem. I felt proud of myself as we got into a 1/4 mile of dirt road and saw that a bunch of skinny wheel bicycles had to push their way up the gravely hill, while I climbed on through. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/discosmilie.gif[/img] I got into T2 smoothly, stopping on the marker as they instructed. Grinned. Laughed. Smiled. Tired as hell!

T2...run
I racked my bike. Put on my running shoes. Ditched the bike helmet. Put on my cap. Guzzled some energy water. Gulped down some goo. Guzzled more water. Then I was off on the run. I was pretty tired from the bike ride and had to go slooowly. The run was on a gravely trail. Lots of up hill. Volunteers were at every mile marker with water, energy drink and wet towel. I replenished as I go. Other runners went by me, and I went by a few. I had to stop to walk for a few minutes as a terrible stitch got under my floating rib.

The octomax run is 3.2 miles, and the quartermax is 6.4. They had to do the trail twice. Usually the first mile and half of a run is the hardest for me...after that I get into a zone. When I got to where I should turn off where my run would end, I ran past it! Several race organisers had to catch up and re-direct me!! [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/704555_dwl.gif[/img]

I ran straight to the finish line. Pumping my arms as I came to the end of my game. Hearing the announcer calling out my name "Sandra F you have finished the race." That was my milestone. I accomplished my goal to finish the race. My husband quickly spotted me and started snapping the camera. Volunteers were hooting and cheering me on, and as other runners came into the finish line. I finished the race in 2:55.

My race was done. I stayed around for food and award ceremony. It was a good race and it was great hearing my husband account of what he saw as a spectator. Close to the end, the rain came down in turrents and it was time to go. Surprisingly, I was not tired but my knees felt sore.

Remember earlier I said while I was running towards T1, after finishing the swim I saw an ambulance with flashing lights heading towards the lake. One of the male competitors went under water, no more than 50ft from the finish of the swim. He drowned. I broke down into tears when I got the news. This was to be a joyous day for everyone...we go in with personal goals but the main goal was to finish the race. He did not. It hurt my heart so badly when it was confirmed and reported in the Post-Dispatch that a racer drowned. He was 28 years old.

My bike...very old 12 spd mountain bike that has no shocks. Someday I'll upgrade to a decent street bike.

Running through the finish line and hearing my name announced that I have finished the race. I grabbed a bottled water and poured it over my head! LOL!

Back at the bike rack...my husband said take a few here before you go.

My race is done! I've taken off my sweaty top and into my official "Who Tri's Harder" shirt, as I walked into the sunset. I was right around 12 noon at this time.

This triathlon biggest sponsor was Merrill-Lynch and it benefit 'Race for Sight' that goes towards eye research. I've signed up for the September triathlon and will be doing a shorter triathlon on July 15th.

I've been a little lazy this week on the running front. Only did 30 mins on Wednesday as was very tired on Tuesday club night. Doing hills this evening though unless we get a heavy shower of rain, in which case I might have to reconsider [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whatever.gif[/img]

morning ILP, mi haffi seh di new bike weh mi buy is a disappointment. it's so stealable mi haffi walk wid 7 foot cable and 25 pound lack [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad2.gif[/img] and di dyam sitt'n is very wobbly because of the mechanism weh mek it shorten and lengthen.

Sue, if you must buy a 'decent' bike that catches the eye, what you expect? [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70388-shameonyou.gif[/img] I have such a bike with a thick cable as well as what we call a 'D' lock. It seems that old bikes can get away with one lock, but you want to keep yours for as long as possible two lock are a must, I've seen bikes with three and a wheel or the seat removed to deter thieves.
