Why do you call it exploitation when it is a service bought and paid for? The so called "rent a dreads" would not appreciate you shutting down their lucrative and not all that unpleasant occupation. The real victims here again are their baby mothers who are at home trying to feed and clothe the children while her man is drinking rum at a dance club and sleeping in an air conditioned hotel room, etc. Sexism and prudery seem to be the ruling theme in this discussion. Overweight, over 40 white women are not supposed to get sex, period. I know plenty of women who fell for charming no good men both black and white and ended up supporting them for way too long. This way the cards are on the table from the get go. What is the difference with this from hiring a driver to take you around the island. Or a guy with a boat. The real issue is universal. The rich have the money and the poor do the work. Sex or housework or childcare or gardening people should be paid a decent wage.

I am sorry, I guess I place way too much value on sex than to view it as a commodity. It is a special gift from God. A sacred trust. Do you realize that it is the closest that any two human beings can be? To treat it like a cheap commodity to be bought and sold is desicration IMHO.

I would call it exploitive because it only exists in it's current form- to the scale it does- because of economic conditions.

People can be exploited without even knowing it, or even caring about it at the time, but that does not make it right or proper.

I don't think anyone is saying 40ish white ladies/men or black for that matter because enough people who come to JA are black, are not supposed to be able to have sex or should go through life celibate and untouched, I think the issue is just how that is accomplished and why...plenty of people travel to various destinations away from their home and strike romance- that's not the issue, although it is probably tough for many people to tell, even the ones in the romance, if there is a difference. I think there are a lot of shades of grey in this subject.

But I would wager that most of the sex tourism to Jamaica and other destinations like Amsterdam/Cuba is a very small percentage of the people who are traveling there, and if you did a study comparing the amount of sex travelers to Jamaica for example to the amount of people who go to Vegas to exploit poor women, you'd be shocked to find Vegas surpasses Jamaica- from what I have seen most of the selling in JA for example are exchanges of opportunity when it comes to tourists, and even many are outright hustled...you can conduct an informal survey yourself amongst your friends I would be interested to hear what thoughts and concepts mention of traveling to Jamaica conjures vs. traveling to Vegas.

The whole sordid mess is something that needs to go, but by focusing on one small part of the equation I think you are missing out on root causes that perpetuate and exacerbate the situation- most of the users of prostitution in Jamaica are not tourists- and you'll never make a dent in the problem that way- if that is the purpose of your putting focus on the issue.

It's actually not that difficult to pull someone off the street and give them an opportunity to do something with themselves that does not include spreading their legs open.

Exactly. The exploitation goes both ways....from men "pretending" they are in an exclusive relationship with a tourist woman just to get her money and "in kind" support to the women in search of the big bamboo, using people without any concern about the impact it has on the society and the fact that this type of activity severely erodes the family structure. Exactly. It must be difficult for White women who don't "fit the mold" in America. Once they are no longer young or slim enough so many White males put them out to pasture in search of some skinny, big boobed 20 something blonde. I have seen this happen time and time again. As much as I have been licking out about the constant rejection Black women face at the hands of these jerks, White women are victims in this whole mess too. Let's face it everybody needs companionship and affection.

Yes of course, you race important historical information. Black women were sexually exploited by White males throughout slavery. It started on the slave ships. In fact, it was the common custom of the day for slave owners to offer male visitors their pick from among the "comely" women on the plantation. This goes WAY back and is systemic. I suppose that is why some become defensive when this topic is discussed. The sexual exploitation is so engrained as an area of "white privilege" that people aren't even conscious of it. The same pattern was repeated whereever the colonizers went. There was sexual exploitation of the local population. This pattern continues today and many fail to connect the dots and see the connection.

Apparently the local Jamaican women don’t appreciate these hordes of apparently otherwise undesirable white women coming into their town and ravaging all the young black bamboo. "These women come here and chew up our men," one young waitress told the Daily Mail. "By the time they've finished romancing them, there's nothing left for us."

It also isn’t uncommon for these milk bottles to actually fall for the things that these men are telling them, which again, only further proves my theory that these women are hit. Lets follow the logic. No man wants to look at you in England, but suddenly you go to Jamaica and now you are causing car accidents in busy intersections? Seriously, the only different between your rent-a-dread and the men back home is that Black Bamboo is poor and needs the money.

"We see it time and again, man. It starts out as fun, then the women start talking about staying in touch. They want to think they're the only one. But these guys have got a number of different women on the go. Some of them have got three, four different women sending them money from back home” said a bartender at Alfred’s Ocean Palace, a popular reggae bar in Negril.

Again, like everything in this story there are two sides to that as well.

Just an FYI, to any potential milk bottles out there. The only place in the world that has a higher AIDS rate than the Caribbean is sub-Saharan Africa. You would think that no one would be thinking of going to the Sudan looking for studs to bone/ But then again, I guess the Sudan doesn’t have beaches and palm trees. AIDS doesn’t ravage European countries like it does African countries not because Europeans practice safer sex, don’t engage in high risk behaviors and have fewer sex partners, it must just be because whoever created AIDS didn’t put it in Europe first. Because obviously, common sense or not engaging in high risk behavior isn’t what is keeping Europe from seeing the same kind of effects from AIDS as it has Africa and the Caribbean that’s for damn sure.

I guess the question no one is asking is why do so many White males have such unrealistic and rigid views on what's attractive that so many women, even women of their own race, are deemed unworthy of notice. I don't who the heck some of these guys think they are. Some aren't that hot when it comes to looks or personality yet they feel they deserve nothing less than a Claudia Schiffer lookalike and only that will do. I think a lot of this reflects very poorly on the men both White and Black. As for the women, I feel for them but don't agree with how they have chosen to cope with their loneliness.

Blackstar...I just re-read this thread and no where did I see anyone showing dis-respect to anyone with the exception of the instance in which you refer to those that do not agree with the subject matter as "pinheads". I saw one other reference to the word troll, but no personal attacks were made along with it. Expressing a view that the topic is not interesting is not trolling it is expressing an opinion on the subject. Perhaps the member who perceived the topic as trolling thought so because of the forum the topic was started in rather than the topic itself but I am not about to begin to analyze that or speak for anyone other than myself.

Personally, I do not believe this topic belongs in the Jamaicaholics forum at all but by the time I saw it, it was well into a discussion so I decided to let it stay as I try not to move a topic that is well under way.

Now, we can decipher the meaning of the word troll further or stay on the topic, whichever.
