My last full day. Leaving tomorrow. Fortunately I have a late flight out so my meltdown will be delayed until either late tonight or early tomorrow morning. For now all I can think about is a cheese omelet, toast with guava jelly and a hot cup of mint tea, no sugar. Maybe hash browns on the side. No, not hash browns, callaloo on the side.

My friend Gee calls to say good morning. He asked me what I had planned for the day. “What are you doing?” He said he was going to the wharf to pick up a barrel.

“Oh…the wharf. I wanna go. I wanna go! Come for me, please.”
“No, Vi. You don’t want to go deh.”
‘Yes, yes I do.”
“Vi, lissen me. You doan want to go to de wharf.”

To keep from taking this early morning rejection personal, I had to ask "why not?" [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif[/img]

Told me it was a long, long process, usually takes all day. You go, get in a line. Register and get a number. Then you wait for them to call your number. Once they call your number, then they will go get the barrel. Once the barrel is found and pulled, then the contents have to be removed and searched. All of this takes place in a huge metal building in which by noon, turns into a life sized oven baking hundreds of people.

I may have left out a procedure or two, doesn’t matter. He convinced me that hanging out at the wharf was not how I should spend my last full day in Jamaica. That doesn’t mean I don’t ever want to see it, just not today. So he said he would call me when he gets back to Negril. It is a little after nine AM, I decide to pack, shower then walk.

I start road side. It’s hot, however the sun isn’t overhead yet so it’s tolerable to be out. It’s quiet, but I know it won’t stay like this for long so I’m going to enjoy it while I can. I know there are many, many amazing places here in Jamaica that I need to see. Places that don’t wake up so early or get so busy before 10:00 AM. I understand there are havens, not necessarily hidden where the quiet is never disturbed by car horns or tourist being typical tourist. Just good old folks doing what they need to do with another day of life.

I love Negril and always will. Good memories are amounting for me here. The main reason I’m attached to this place is the beach and having the ocean to escape to. I need to be close to the water. The sight, sound and smell is therapeutic to my soul. So what if the rest of the world abandons me and leave me for dead, the Caribbean is reliable, always be here for me. Jamaica is my choice of access to her.

As I walk the road I admit my allegiance is to Negril, but I am ready to see other areas. Walk paths that are unpaved, not trampled on daily by the masses. Time to venture out more. No matter where I wind up, those ventures will start and end in Negri.

A nice thing happened along the way. I see a small, old model truck pass me, slow up and gently back into a side path about a quarter mile ahead. The truck is idling facing out. I take my time walking the road. Stopping to take a picture or shake a pebble from my slipper. As I got closer, I can see the driver. His arm is resting on the edge of the open truck window. Looks about 60 something. He’s obviously patiently waiting for me to get closer.
