This is the point lost on some people. I'm surprised it took this long. Those artistes and their supporters would be wrong to think that only the homosexual community is against this kind of music content. Humano, You could not have said it any better before and now... I see what you're saying. If dancehall, which mostly reaches the youth, doesn't strive for innovation and if a number of the leading artistes continue to rely on themes of violence, degredation of women, and crass materialism, then that form of expression will meet a certain death. Already, we see that some leading artistes are becoming pariahs on the international music scene.

Still, I think reggae fans all over the world will still be drawn to Roots Reggae, despite what's happening with dancehall, and they (including the Germans) do make the distinction.

It's a defining moment for the industry. Perhaps this is the time for a rebirth or a rediscovery of Jamaican pop music.

Reggae and Dancehall is still big worldwide if a few unconscious performers want to reduce their careers to the fringes of hate-mongering fandom then so be it, they can I suppose hold private showings closed to the general public.

I dont see where germany,s decision has anything to do with the gay community,it,s right that countries should insist on some decency in the music their young people listen to,..it,s a matter of decorum,if the music is in poorly bad taste then countries have a right to ban it.

I dont know when it started being acceptable for jamaican artists to cuss bad words in their songs,..or talk so vile and disgusting.
This issue is not only about their advocating the murder of gays.

I would not let my children listen to most of that, nor would I listen to any of that in the presence of my mother, my yardstick for offence...If others want to listen to it I have no issue with them. But I dont want to be verbally assulted by it.

While not a fan of this type of music, I see it not as culture but as a commodity. Others will object. I find the wjhole dancehall passa-passa too loud, too crude too tiring... It is a high value commodity that generates value, it is creative, it has high interlectual property content, it creats jobs.

I dont beleive that the Jamaican goverment has invested in music compare to hte money they have wasted over the years on the sugar industry, air Jamaica, FINAC. Jamaica should invest in improving both the creative side, the marketing, the technical side of Dance hall. Having Jamaican artist recording in other languages.. getting artists coming to record in Jamaica.. where they can have competent trained technicians and musicans with professionals rahter thant the adhoc talented amatuers that we have over the years... the truth is that it is the black urban masses that has the talent, driove that it is. While elephant Man etal should realise that is that getting a hit in the high value markets is of more value that &quot;keeping it real&quot; or &quot;true to their culture&quot; The fact of the matter it is that Jamaica creativity should be nurtured, so far it is being nurtured by widows mites from the poor.

To be quite honest wahalla I do enjoy dancehall music,some of it is listenable,without the swearing and the constant lewd sexual references,some of it is just sheer rubbish though,designed to appeal to a certain gutter mentality.
You are correct that it`s the poor urban masses that has the talent,and they seem to sing from a background based on their limited social and environmental interactions.

Dancehall needs to decide where it wants to go,they cant have their cake and eat it too,either you make gutter music that appeals only to a certain audience,and stop bleating when your music is rejected abroad,or you tidy up the music and appeal to a wider audience,&quot;keeping it real&quot; in jamaica doesnt put food on the table,it is appealing to a universal market that not only opens up the way for other artistes,but ensure jamaican music survives.

The singers have promised not to sing the hate lyrics at their shows yet the gay community are still protesting outside the venues where the singers are booked for in quite a threatening way resulting in the cancelling of the shows.They are taking it too far,The singers have promised they will not sing he songs with the hate lyrics yet the gay community does not want them to sing at all.That is where it is unfair,
Just because a man once sang a song that the gay community did not like,I can never hear that person sing ever again?regardless of what he sings?They go OTT as with most things in their life.

The time has come for the attention to be placed on &quot;Reggae&quot; music. This is nothing new. Throughout history there has been a cyclical war against the &quot;music of the moment&quot; by the so-called concerned, who are only hypocrites with an axe to grind.

Many of us just jump on the bandwagon to appear as if we are one of the conscious/concerned, while we spew, curse and swear more than any musician would.

Some things will never change but no matter how we slice it, and whether we would like to admit it or not, there is no other music that has advocated or imposed violence on society than <span style="font-weight: bold">ROCK and ROLL</span> yet, where are the bans and uproar?

Didn't we have a vibrant discussion here last year about Jamaicans at home voicing their disgust at some of the foul lyrics in &quot;our&quot; music, especially with it being too vulgar for our children to listen and dance to? If I remember well, they were calling for the banning of them [<span style="font-weight: bold">songs with vulgar and offensive lyrics</span>] being played on the radio.

Most people swear spew and curse at some point in their life,,some more than others,they just dont put it to song and expect the world to embrace it,I am sure even you with your halo swear spew and curse at some point.

Not so fast Humano...here I was thinking the reverse that some of this took off like lightning because of the high five this type of music has been receiving from foreigners.

I agree that some of &quot;yaawd music&quot; now have very offensive lyrics, but as I said, I don't think they would gain so much popularity abroad had it not been for foreigners of similar mind-set who think it is cool/groovy/ IRIE or whateva they want to call it.

..so blame has to be shared, and there is more than enough to go around...starting with our own GOVAHMENT who didn't think some of these lyrics were just plain volatile...even using some of them in political campaigns.
