I am listening to some Ringo and Welton on Virgo right now. I just finished transferring it from on media to the next.

But even while this is happening many Artistes are out there that have not gone down, or started out on that path, which is basically what I am saying we can safely forget about the few that make it their daily bread.

What I like about the long time inuendoes was the cheekiness of it,you knew what was being said,but it wasnt said outright,it was done in a way not to offend,to put a smile on the face of adults,but to confound the children.
The lyrics werent nasty,just inventive and imaginative.

Even the early sound system clash had a bit of two way banter without it descending into what it has descended into now.
A guy would tell would tell you about his prowess with a woman,but he wouldnt paint you the whole picture,from start to finish.

The point is what is made public, go on wax and coem out ot the mouth of these guys in public settings away from the dance hall.

In Jamaica in the early days 99% of the slack lyrics was not made public, it was safely contained in the Dance Hall.
Instance for years Echo, Big John and Flux made their name as artiste, selectors and operators of the slackest Sound System in Jamaica.
they caused not alarm till they died and Yellow Man took up one of their standards and put it on wax. Jamaicans were shocked and outraged to hear that Mass Ran a Ride Miss Lou, but that ish had been going on for years.

Virtually every song in the Mento catalog is slack, but the artiste were not going around in public damning folks for not enjoying open sex or accusing them of been funny.

I tried to read and re-read what the contributors here have said, and many significant points have been made....almost everybody comes across as seriously interested in the problem and is willing to look at it HONESTLY, face the issue [current status of our music] fairly and squarely and call a spade a spade.

One could ask when and why did we go on the downward spiral musically [IMO] to the extent that many of us feel embarrassed to liss'n to some of our current music fram yaawd, an juss kis wi teeet when wi hear dem...WHEN??

If this is any consolation, IMO it is NOT only Jamaican music that has taken a nose-dive in terms of quality/substance...juss look at the billboards and the charts...haawdly anniting out dere to look fahwud tuh as good NEW music and entertainment....everybody is either copying, remixing or fashioning sumting wid di same ole same ole monotonous repetitious beat...can haawdly call it music, more like noise; but *I* guess these are signs of the time[s]....and since I am not a music buff anymore, maybe my opinion is off an some flack might even come this way, but a juss soh mi seet.

What the Jamaican government needs to do is to provide more funding for the ARTS including and especially music, for we do have many talented persons who could benefit...schools in every parish, from kindaawgatn to college level, with emphasis on lyrics writing, composition, and instrumentation...[aldoa Jamaicans noh need noh course[s] on how to beat drums] teach them how to market their skills/work and recreate that which had propelled us onto the global stage in the past...in that way, we regain our standing among the music stalwarts....an tuh si dat some of them had even imitated and copied our music.

These schools would be free of cost, and could also serve as a venue to keep the younger ones occupied and productive. We could even attempt developing the craft of making musical instruments..

If this takes off and com tuh fruition economically the artistes and the country AS A WHOLE would benefit even more.

B/giant, Thanks for including those three icons shown in bold. It would appear that you're are accepting of those three as the standard bearers for Jamaican Reggae... I am sorry to displease you, but I do not accept much of the current &quot;music&quot; being peddled as Reggae...
