Unfortunately, even if the Obama administration banned new drilling off the coasts, under current contracts, oil developers are under no obligation to shut down their existing operations

i wouldnt advocate banning offshore drilling.. worse mi nuh know any viable, realistic, feasible alternative.
However like anything, you have to have a DRP.. a Disaster Recovery Plan.. of the sorts.
A mean, yuh data for example.. There are people paid good money to concieve, design and test disaster recovery measures. So say for example, you have a single point of data loss, you do a recovery.. you have a fire on one floor of the building, your DRP should lay out alternative location on the building to access the data, you have a fire in the server room, the dRP states the alternative site where your company access the datat.. and expectation.. The building blows up, the DRPidentifies the alternative geograpic location where you company will continue doing business with limited access to crutial data.. ALL this in the aim of securing the survival of the business.
Now did we start drilling oil offshore just yestreday?
this is the only why I can accept that there was no realistict tested contingency for the probabilityy of one of these rigs springing a leak.
We take real drastic measures to secure somthing as mundade (in comparison) as data, but no real disaster plan for offshore drilling??
I'm at my wits end to graps any reasoning that 34 days into a massive oil leak without any real fix is acceptable..
Remember the "top kill" scheduled for Wednesday is yet another "try".. what if that fails? The "top hat" failed weeks ago.. (them and theircool fany descriptions)
what next, 'top kill" fails, we wait another cople weeks for another "Top " something.. At this point I wouldnt be surprised if the "Top kill" fails, they finally to try plugging it with sme stray pu-ss and call it "Top Cat"..Comment

I will still contend that the administration does NOT have anything to gain from letting the oil spill lag on for days..all they get from that is bad press and agitated people (such as sentiments in this thread) so why would they deliberatly NOT do anything or stall intentionally. It just doesn't add up to me. What is there to be gained? If that can be explained then I will drop my conclusion that they don't have a clue.

they had mititigation strategies.. They had had risk assesments and all those other so called management tools... probability ratings and all that good stuff thjat works for MBA's.. They work for paper schuffing service orientated job. All of these are [censored] and are paper shuffling used to deflect the truth.. Taking aways ownership from the people on the job... Reducing the enpowerment of the guys with the switch and...
BP had multiple redundancy and they failed. Primary, seacondary and tertiary.. They mobilised half of the worlds spill capability. ORCL the spill company was set up by a group of oil was there in literally 8 hours. they had spill kits for type two and three spills set up and in place with in 24 hours...
They are actually working the problem... The federal goverment cannot do a better job than BP. They lack the skill and management nuance and the experience.
what is annoying is that there are focus on the US and this spill yet these spills happen world wide and as long as yankis fish dont get killed then ot dont matter.... Drill in Kenya but not off Virginia.. crap ! Nigeria not California ????? What happens when Cuba drills in the Eastern Gulf using the same technology ????
My one critisism of BP is their use of dispersants. Oil breaks down naturally.....
BP are managing the information flow because they are scared that they get sued. Any where else information would have been made available and the information made to tohhyer operators so they can address it and save another spill....
Last year whn a Petrobras rig sank the information was out right away.... Here it simply not being shared....Comment

When my brother and sister left the military they both retired to the San Diego area.
My sister (the environmental science person) was hired by a company to clean up military training accidents when they happened (basically govt contractors). When fighter jets would crash or boats/ships would leak or they would put ship in/out of dry dock or decommission ships or subs would have machanical issues while underwater, the company's job was to go out with a team to clean up oil, pull out parts, etc and make sure that these things never reached the beaches, etc. They would then right reports for "clients" telling them what to do/what not to do so that the environment wouldnt be greatly impacted.
When the Valdiz crashed it leaked for 2 weeks or somesuch.
ALOT of the scientists (my sister included) wanted to get extra money to go help, but because they worked for "the gov't" they were not allowed.
When things got really bad for Exxon, the word went out to any and all who could help.
When it all came down to it...Exxon was desperate and began paying scientists (at whatever they asked) to help them. My sister went. She love money just like di next smaddy.
She was then let go (for contract violations).
After the Valdez was righted and towed out of Alaska, good ole Uncle Sam hired just about all of those guys to come work fi dem. They now sit all over the country (mostly along waterways) waiting for such disasters (they do other stuff too).
My sister works for the EPA. Mi sure mi peeps dem on di news ah clap off dem mouth bout BP.
ETA: Where do you think the White House went to get information to go tell British Pollution to use less toxic disbursements? right from the EPA. now of course BP come wid dem "we cant find it in the quantities that we need" argument
but whateva. Now I bet when Obama decide this cyan go on much longer...the people weh mek what dem need will automatically stawt fi mek di quantities needed.
