I disagree Nanook. When someone comes into a thread and tells me as a Black Jamaican that I don't have the right to discuss a topic that is relevant to my country and accuses me of trolling, that is rude and the HEIGHT of disrespect. I would never go on a predominantly White board or predominantly Asian board and try to tell people that they have no right to discuss a topic that concerns their country or area of the world. This was said 7 pages into a thread that was going well and in which the discussion was productive:

Nanook, you and I have spoken about this on-line and I have no bone to pick with you. (We are fellow horse lovers and intermitently communicate off-line about horses).

I do think that the handling of this thread highlights the need for consistency among moderation. Again not blaming anyone, it's not that big a deal. I started the thread in the GD but then thought that if I expected the tourist men and woman who could give us some insight to participate, it should be in Jamaicaholics. It is now in Pon de Verandah which is an area tha mostly Jamaicans frequent. I don't know how much insight one Jamaican can give another about the behaviour of the tourists but you never know. I think there needs to be agreement among moderators about what belongs where...tough to do I know. The thread has gone well. The discussion has been productive. With few exceptions, everyone has stuck to the topic and communicated in a civil manner.

I think there are a couple of things at work, which cannot be ignored. First and foremost, marketing and the media have done a masterful job of selling the idea of what constitutes beauty. We are bombarded with it on every front, and one just have to look in any male magazine, or ads targetting men, to see how strong - and obviously effective - the marketing push is. It doesn't matter that most of the pictures are "touched up" to reflect women that exists only in one's imagination. The fact is that it serves its purpose, and generally speaking, some men have bought into it. It has long been established that men are visual beings, and therefore what is seen becomes very important despite the relativity of beauty. It is all in the eyes of the beholder.

The other thing is the historical perception regarding the sexual prowess, stamina, whatever, of the black man / woman which, IMO, has somehow fed into the desire of some non-blacks to experience "something different". Working in the downtown core, my perspective is that black women, for the most part, are miles ahead of their non-black counterparts in sex appeal, the way they dress, etc. Sure God blessed some with broad hips which they are happy to sway from side to side, ample bosoms, butts some other women would die for, that kind of a thing. I know - and heard of - a number of non-black males who are beside themselves when those sisters walk by. It has been said that black women are the most sexually aggressive and will do just about anything once they decide to get their groove on, and I do believe this stereotyping of the black women still exists. Same goes for the black man regarding penis size, length, whatever. For some, that perception is hard to resist and something they have to experience for themselves. Going back and bragging about one's exploits, word of mouth marketing, also fuel the curiosity.

I wouldn't put it all down to 'loneliness' though for some that might be a latent factor.

I recall doing a paper some years ago on Women as Sexual Objects - The Role and Stereotyping of Women in the Mass Media, and during my research was intrigued to see that while some women consider what some of their peers do as "wrong", the women involved had no problem with the choices they made. I recall one woman defining marriage as 'legalized prostitution', her rationale being that if the man did not provide for / take care of his wife, she would shut herself down intimately. In her mind this proves that even in marriage, good sex was dependent on the woman getting what she wanted and she satisfied her husband as a result. In other words, he "paid" (bring home his pay cheque, be a good husband, etc) and she gave him "some". That arrangement is fine until he messes up.

I also recall speaking with one female who questioned why would she want to be in a sexual relationship with a man who would not necessarily give her the kind of life she wanted. By doing what she did, she controlled those things. What stood out for me was when she said to the effect, "I could do a guy for free, and call it love, but why would I want to do that when I can do the same guy and charge him my price?"

We may not agree with them of course, but when they can justify their choices to themselves, it makes you wonder who is really 'exploiting' who.

I have to agree I had a "raise eyebrow" moment when I came across the thread for the first time. I do not understand the fascination some people have with WHITE people and sex.

As far as sex tourism goes, people of every race participate. It is my humble opinion that this thread would have had a lot more credibility if the subject had been sex tourism...as opposed to having a lone race of people singled out.

This issue is an important one. It impacts Jamaicans and tourists alike. Yes all races participate in sex tourism but like it or not, the majority who go abroad seeking these experiences are White. Why? The time and the means? This is the same whether we look at this from the historical perspective or from the modern POV. If we want to understand the dynamics, we can't sweep the racial factors under the rug.

To get a broad perspective and participation, I felt Jamaicaholics was the appropriate forum. Anyway, that is water under the bridge. There has been some excellent discussion and an analysis of this issue from various points of view. Certainly the patterns we see in Jamaica are different from those we see in Asia. MarieK pointed out the age thing. I guess the laws against sexual exploitation of minors are not as strict in some jurisdictions as in others. For the life of me, I don't get the attraction that some men have for women who are younger than their daughters...it's sick. Sometimes it is like father and son are competing for the same woman.

Very complex. Of course I can't relate to that mindset. To me marriage and sex are sacred. I just can't see treating these special gifts from God as commodities.

Oh, I agree with you, but therein lies the 'problem' though. In an ever increasing secular society, those views are considered passé, and once sex and marriage lose their "sacredness", it creates a whole different set of issues including the one this thread is about.

Interestingly, during the research for the previously mentioned paper, a considerable amount of "blame" for the sexualization of women as objects was laid on the feminists who not only has undermined marriage over the years, but has also promoted the argument that a woman's body is her own and she can do with it whatsoever she pleases. The same argument was a part of the infamous Roe vs Wade debate that literally opened the door to 'legalized' abortions.

It shouldn't be surprising that where there is a decline in moral absolutes, there will be an increase in certain behaviors. It is almost inevitable.
