Back to the topic, the racism that I met here will depend on the word itself. The people in question are by some referred to as a race of people and by other tribes. Anyways, I see all forms of racism against these people.
A little bit of history.

According to estern homeland theory prior to becoming known to the Roman world, Slavic speaking tribes were part of the many multi-ethnic confederacies of Eurasia- such as the Sarmatian, Hun and Gothic empires.[21]The Slavs emerged from obscurity when the westward movement of Germans in the 5th and 6th centuries AD (thought to be in conjunction with movement of peoples from Siberia and Eastern Europe: Huns, and later Avars and Bulgars) started the great migration of the Slavs, who settled the lands abandoned by Germanic tribes fleeing the Huns and their allies: westward into the country between the Oder and the Elbe-Saale line; southward into Bohemia, Moravia, much of present day Austria, the Pannonian plain and the Balkans; and northward along the upper Dnieper river. Perhaps some Slavs migrated with the movement of the Vandals to Iberia and north Africa.[22].

Around the 6th century, Slavs appeared on Byzantine borders in great numbers.[23] The Byzantine records note that after they marched through grass wouldn't regrow under their footprints. After a military movement even the Peloponnese and Asia Minor were reported to have Slavic settlements.[24] This southern movement has traditionally been seen as an invasive expansion.[25]. By the end of the 6th century, Slavs had settled the Eastern Alps region.

When their migratory movements ended, there appeared among the Slavs the first rudiments of state organizations, each headed by a prince with a treasury and a defense force. Moreover, it was the beginnings of class differentiation, and nobles either pledged allegiance to the Frankish/ Holy Roman Emperors or the Byzantine Emperors.

In the 7th century, the Frankish merchant Samo, who supported the Slavs fighting their Avar rulers, became the ruler of the first known Slav state in Central Europe, which, however, most probably did not outlive its founder and ruler. This provided the foundation for subsequent Slavic states to arise on the former territory of this realm with Carantania being arguably the oldest of them. Very old also are the Principality of Nitra and the Moravian principality (see under Great Moravia). In this period, there existed central Slavic groups and states such as the Balaton Principality, but the subsequent expansion of the Magyars, as well as the Germanisation of Austria, separated the northern and southern Slavs. The First Bulgarian Empire, ruled by a core of Bulgars, was founded in AD 681. After their subsequent Slavicisation, it was instrumental in the spread of Slavic literacy and Christianity to the rest of the Slavic world.

Throughout their history, Slavs came into contact with non-Slavic groups. In the postulated &quot;homeland&quot; region (present-day Ukraine), they had contacts with Sarmatians and the Germanic Goths. After their subsequent spread, they began assimilating non-Slavic peoples. For example, in the Balkans, there were Paleo-Balkan peoples, such as Thracians, Illyrians and Greeks. Having lost their indigenous language due to persistant Hellenisation and the Roman conquest, what remained of the Thracians and Illyrians were completely absorbed into the Slavic tribes. Later invaders such as Bulgars and even Cumans mingled with the Slavs also, particularly in eastern parts (ie Bulgaria). In the western Balkans, south Slavs and Germanic Gepids intermarried with Avar invaders, eventually producing a Slavicised population. In central Europe, the Slavs intermixed with Germanic, Celtic and Raetian peoples, while the eastern Slavs encountered Uralic and Scandinavian peoples. Scandinavians and Finnic peoples were involved in the early formation of the Russian state but were completely Slavicised after a century. Some Finno-Ugric tribes in the north were also absorbed into the expanding Russian population.[26] In the 11th and 12th centuries, constant incursions by nomadic Turkic tribes, such as the Kipchaks and the Pechenegs, caused a massive migration of East Slavic populations to the safer, heavily forested regions of the north.[27]

Polabian Slavs (Wends) settled in parts of England (Danelaw), apparently as Danish allies; Polabian-Pomeranian Slavs are also known to have even settled on Norse age Iceland.[28] Saqaliba refers to the Slavic mercenaries and slaves in the medieval Arab world in North Africa, Sicily and Al-Andalus. Saqaliba served as caliph's guards.[29][30] In the 12th century, there was intensification of Slavic piracy. The Northern Crusades caused great loss of life among the Wends, and they consequently offered little opposition to German colonization (Ostsiedlung) of the Elbe-Oder region and were gradually assimilated by the Germans, with the exception of Sorbs.[31] The Polabian language survived until the beginning of the 19th century in what is now the German state of Lower Saxony.[32]

Cossacks, although Slavic-speaking and Orthodox Christians, came from a mix of ethnic backgrounds, including Tatars and other Turks. Many early members of the Terek Cossacks were Ossetians.

The Gorals of southern Poland and northern Slovakia are partially descended from Romance-speaking Vlachs who migrated into the region from the 14th to 17th centuries and were absorbed into the local population.

Conversely, some Slavs were assimilated into other populations. Although the majority continued south, attracted by the riches of the territory which would become Bulgaria, a few remained in the Carpathian basin and were ultimately assimilated into the Magyar or Romance speaking population. There is a large number of river names and other placenames of Slavic origin in Romania.[33] Similarly, the populations of the respective eastern parts of Austria and Germany, and to a much lesser extent eastern Italy, to some degree comprised of people with Slavic ancestry.

In the entire Austro-Hungarian Empire of approximately 50 million people, about 23 million were Slavs. The Slavic peoples who were, for the most part, denied a voice in the affairs of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, were calling for nationalistic self-determination. During the World War I, representatives of the Czechs, Slovaks, Poles, Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes set up organizations in the Allied countries to gain sympathy and recognition.[34] In 1918, after World War I ended, the Slavs established such independent states as Czechoslovakia, Second Polish Republic, and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes.</span>

Because of the vastness and diversity of the territory occupied by Slavic people, there were several centers of Slavic consolidation. In the 19th century, Pan-Slavism developed as a movement among intellectuals, scholars, and poets, but it rarely influenced practical politics and didn't find support in all nations that had Slavic origins. Pan-Slavism became compromised when Russian Empire started to use it as an ideology justifying its territorial conquests in Central Europe as well as subjugation of other ethnic groups of Slavic origins such as Poles or Ukrainians, and the ideology became associated with Russian imperialism. The common Slavic experience of communism combined with the repeated usage of the ideology by Soviet propaganda after World War II within the Eastern bloc (Warsaw Pact) was a forced high-level political and economic hegemony of the USSR dominated by Russians. A notable political union of the 20th century that covered many South Slavs was Yugoslavia, but it was broken apart as well.

The word &quot;Slavs&quot; was used in the national anthem of the Slovak Republic (1939–1945), Yugoslavia (1943-1992) and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (1992-2003), later Serbia and Montenegro (2003-2006).

Poles and Other Slavs

It is often forgotten that Christian Poles and other Slavs, notably Ukrainians and Byelorussians, were also primary targets of Nazi Germany hatred during World War II. To the Nazis, the Slavs were considered Untermenschen,or subhumans, and nothing more than obstacles to gaining territory necessary for the superior German race. This philosophy is apparent in Hitler's statement, &quot;The destruction of Poland is our primary task. The aim is not the arrival at a certain line but the annihilation of living forces....&quot;

The combination of a Nazi genocidal policy and the Nazis' thirst for more living space resulted in disaster for Polish, Ukrainian, and Byelorussian populations. Millions of Slavs were deported to Germany for forced labor. Intelligentsia, consisting of teachers, physicians, clergy, business owners, attorneys, engineers, landowners, and writers, were imprisoned in concentration camps or publicly executed. Tens of thousands of Ukrainians were executed by mobile killing squads, or Einsatzgruppen.

Those who were sent to camps had to wear badges, of course. There was not one badge designation for Poles and other Slavs. Rather, a Polish or Slavic person was categorized as a criminal, asocial, political prisoner, and so on.

Millions upon millions of non-Jews were slaughtered in the Slavic countries.

Italian Police Free 113 Poles Living in Slave Labor Camps


ROME, July 18 (Reuters) — The police on Tuesday freed 113 Poles living “like slaves” in forced labor camps, where those refusing to work were raped, tortured with metal batons and attacked by dogs.


The authorities in Italy and Poland said that at least four workers appeared to have committed suicide in the camps, in Italy’s southern region of Puglia, but that those deaths were being investigated as suspicious.

“To call the situation revealed by the carabinieri investigation simply inhuman does in no way do it justice,” Italy’s anti-Mafia chief, Piero Grasso, told reporters in the southern city of Bari. “We are talking about conditions similar to those of concentration camps, where people were not only exploited for their work, but also kept in a state of slavery,” he said.

Twenty people were arrested for human trafficking, and the police were looking for seven more. They were said to be members of a ring that recruited people in Poland through advertisements in local newspapers promising them agricultural work in Italy.

Poland’s national police chief, Marek Bienkowski, said at a news conference in Warsaw that the workers were watched by Ukrainian, Italian and Polish armed guards. He added that there was evidence of rape and of torture with metal batons of those who tried to resist. Dogs were set against some victims.

The Italian police said the Poles were forced to work for up to 15 hours a day and were fed little more than bread and water. The Polish news agency PAP said more than 1,000 Poles may have been victims of the ring. Apart from the four suicides being investigated, the police in both countries did not rule out the possibility that more people might have been killed or died from exhaustion.

I had no idea about the history of the Slavs. Now I vaguely remember and an Armenian acquaintance told me that Armenians are related to Slavs. I went to high school with a lot of Armenians. I had heard of the genoide of the Armenians. I don't know much about it but he was telling me about it.

Speaking of which their history in America shows an interesting parallel on the political level similar to Europe. At first the Slavs were not seen as whites but not just them but Southern Europeans and were shifted to the black category. This tertiary source will do

One of the most eye-opening books I read was Matthew Jacobson's Whiteness of a Different Color, in which he traces the historical development of the concept of the white American. In 1790, the new American government offered naturalized citizenship to all &quot;free white persons.&quot; To be considered white was based on one's fitness for the demands of democracy, based on the standard of the &quot;civilized&quot; European. Being American excluded by definition Blacks, Asians, and other clearly non-white persons. Jews and Catholics were grudgingly admitted as citizens. Despite this Euro-centrism, over time Europeans of certain backgrounds were questioned as to their whiteness, especially after the Irish potato famine of the 1840s brought thousands of Irish into America. Look at any collection of political cartoons from this period (you can see a wonderful collection at the Ellis Island Museum), and you are confronted with such blatant bigotry as to be almost unimaginable today. By the end of the 19th century in response to the huge waves of Europeans immigrating to the US, as well as the flow of free blacks into the American mainstream, the definition of whiteness narrowed based on pseudo-scientific support. The concept of biologically different races took hold, by which definition one could never escape the designation of race. Whether Slav, Teuton, or Celt, these designations were said to reflect not only physical but intellectual and moral characteristics. Some races were physically stronger than others, some were smarter, some were more honest. The Bolshevik Revolution in Russia and World War I at the start of the 20th century, led to a feeling that America needed to be protected from the threat of foreigners, or non-whites. Of course, the concept of &quot;white&quot; then narrowed even further. In a 1909 case, an Armenian appealed for naturalization based on the 1790 law, saying that anyone who was not black was therefore white.
