JY, learn to read and comprehend better what is typed. I made a rhetorical statement because all ppl do it without even realizing it as much as we love to protest different. The US has hijacked the word "American". Jamaica is in the Americas, like South & Central America and the rest of the Caribbean. That makes everyone from that part of the world American.

On a side-note, when the French want to be precise they use the adjective <span style="font-style: italic">états-unisien</span>. It's a pity the equivalent doesn't exist in English.

when i travel outside the USA i tell people i am from the states - not i'm american

the african part they can figure out just by looking at me

i don't know french....how about united statians of america? it's a little wordy, i'm sure it won't catch on.
